Boeing Co pleaded not guilty on Thursday to a 737 MAX fraud conspiracy felony charge after families objected to a 2021 Justice Department agreement to resolve the investigation into the plane's flawed design.

Boeing’s chief safety officer, Mike Delaney, entered the not-guilty plea on behalf of the planemaker at a three-hour hearing. A not-guilty plea is standard in deferred prosecution agreements.

U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor last week ordered Boeing to appear to be arraigned after he ruled that people killed in the two Boeing 737 MAX crashes are legally considered "crime victims."

Seems Boeing are in the news again - United flight 1722: US to investigate Boeing 777's mysterious nosedive
US air safety officials say they will investigate why a Boeing 777 jet unexpectedly lost altitude and nearly plunged into the Pacific Ocean.

United Airlines flight 1722 had left Maui on 18 December and was climbing when it suddenly plummeted 1,400ft (425m), reports say.

It stabilised at just 775ft in altitude and went on to land safely in San Francisco 27 minutes early.

Its adds to a number of near misses involving planes this year.

The flight was going normally until 71 seconds after take-off from Kahului Airport when it suddenly dropped in elevation, according to Flightradar24, an aviation website.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which investigates US plane crashes, will produce a report about the incident within three weeks.

I initially thought it was the emergency exit from the pics, but it maybe doesn't look to be the case?

Apparently in some versions it is an emergency exit, but not in the Alaska Airlines version.

It's a plugged emergency exit. I don't think this is specifically a Boeing issue per say, perhaps a delivery inspection issue. I'm sure it will come to light. Majority of MAX's now grounded in the US. Elsewhere might follow suit and it will likely effect Ryanairs MAX's as they also have these plugged exits. Actually, they're not affected, ignore me.

I would imagine the hole for the door is always there, they just "brick it up" in some 'planes, so to speak.

These doors/plugs are supposed to be designed so the air pressure inside the plane forces them shut, but that only works when the plane is at altitude and inside pressure >> outside pressure. That's why the passenger doors always open inwards initially. Clearly that didn't quite work :shock: But then again, if the panel buckled/folded/creased or something it'd fit through the hole...

There have been instances of this sort of thing before. DC-10s had several instances of cargo doors opening mid flight (those have to open outwards due to being larger). There was a famous BA flight where the windscreen departed, nearly taking one of the pilots with it.

That’s correct about the bolts, I remember watching the programme about it, the pilot was pretty much fully outside being held by his feet and legs by the other pilots.
