Bluetooth helmet gizmos

Post by A_morti »

My helmet is overdue replacing. It's a suomy Mx tourer from around 2015 (!).

I specifically want an adventure style helmet (dirt bike helmet with a visor) which must have a flip down sun visor, excellent ventilation, and lightweight like the suomy, but they don't appear to make that one or an equivalent anymore.

I usually use apple earphones in my helmet for navigation and noise reduction. Of course in both ears, or the noise reduction doesn't work. Now, it has always been illegal in Malta to have an earphone in the roadside (right) ear, but they've just increased the fine to above what's worth the risk.

So, what's the deal with Bluetooth helmet speakers? Do you have to buy a helmet that's ready for that, or can they go in any helmet?

You'll either have cut outs for them already there or you'll have to make them yourself.

I've fitted two different (Scala) intercoms to my last three helmets.

They've all been Arai's, so out come the cheek pads, the covers off and the speakers stuck to the polystyrene pads and the material covers back on over the top and back into the helmet. On max volume I can still hear them at 80mph.

Arai don't do (internal) sun visors, but I imagine it's easy to fit the speakers on any brand that does removeable cheek pads.

As KFB said I have Arai Tour X4 and fitted Cardo speakers inside it with no real issues. I always run black visors on my helmets and carry a clear spare/clear goggles if I am going to running in the dark.

My only helmet with a drop down sun visor is the Shoei Neotec 2 which comes with all the cubby holes to hide the approved scala intercoms and batteries but I had a spare set of Cardo earphones and mount so bunged them into the helmet and just swap the Bluetooth unit between helmets when I use them

Scorpion do the Exo which has everything you want as far as I can see including the drop down sun visor ;)

If you're wanting to have nice clear 2-way conversation between 2 motorcycles then that's a tall order, and probably not solvable cheaply.
We use the Ejeas Q2 intercom system and it works great, up to a mile away. But it is nearly $100 for the set :(

The good news is, they will pop into nearly any existing helmet you already have so you don't need to buy new helmets. Just check yours to see if there is enough space beside the ears for the headphone inserts, which are about 2" round and 1/2 " thick each.

I think part of how my suomy is sooo lightweight (1250g with peak and sun visor) is that the shell is pretty small. There's basically no padding between your ear and the shell and the cheek pads aren't exactly luxurious. That never bothered me much though, since ventilation and lightness are of more interest in the climates where I live - Spain, Gibraltar, Malta. Does however mean there's pretty much nowhere to fit a speaker inside the shell.

@Andrey I'm not looking for interbike comms, and while talking to a passenger would be nice on occasion, it's not worth a lot of hassle or money to me, so I'd be quite happy with a speaker only, without mic. I'm not too worried about cheapest price, actually I'd consider $100 for something of quality as pretty decent. I mean - my apple earphones were 250, or somewhere around there.

@Bigyin will have a look at that lid, thanks. There's also a local place which gets LS2 helmets including one whose features seem to fit the bill, albeit it seems a bit too cheap.

The LS2 range are hugely popular here among the beginners I teach as they seem to be well made but at the budget end of the scale. I was surprised how expensive the Scorpion one was as they have gone from more near the budget range to mid price range in the past few years

@Bigyin that scorpion lid is kinda unfortunate looking, innit? Like it melted a bit.
