Expensive Supermarkets

I've got a Makro card, a Booker Card, a B&Q card and a Halfords trade card, been offered a Costco card.
Them's all ten a penny.

Booker & Makro have always been bloody expensive and best avoided unless totes necessary.

No fuel at my branch of Costco, hence why I've not been super keen to get it. If there were it would have paid for itself in a heartbeat with my old commute.

Coincidence. They just had the manager of 'Cucumber Central' on the radio (huge glasshouses in the Lea Valley I think). Nothing growing at the moment due to energy costs and lack of staff/staff costs so they're importing from places like Israel and Egypt or Spain.

It never seemed to make much sense heating glasshouses in this country to grow salad in winter anyway - particularly when Spain is a hoppity-skip away. Doesn't make much sense shipping stuff like that all the way from Israel and Egypt either. (He said it takes a week or more so it's not fresh when it does get here).

20p/litre less than I saw in Tesco this morning.

On my car that's about £12 a tank less. Better than a kick in the bollox for sure, but given that I only fill about up once a month these days hardly a deal maker either.

Morrison's have just restricted their staff discount card to staff only. Mrs. G was her sister's nominated family member and could also get a discount of 10% off the shopping until last week. Bit of a bugger.

Still got the John Lewis Partner Card which give 25% off most of their stuff, mind.

In our town we have; Waitrose, M&S, Sainsbury, Lidl, Iceland, Tesco and we’re about to get an Aldi.

In my experience of what they offer, I’d say Lidl do by far and away the best: olive oil, oils generally, sweet potatoes, bread and other fridge type stuff. I imagine Aldi will be similar.

M&S do the best instant food stuff: their lasagne etc. Waitrose have the best fish counter and meats , but not as good as the butchers- so we get meat from there.

Tesco is bang average shit. If I need stuff like toilet roll it’s fine. Sainsbury’s is a bit better, plus they stock the best pack lunch stuff for school dinners.

We cook home food 7 days a week and shop a lot. The above isn’t helpful for anyone but me, but there we go.

Aldi / Lidl do a remarkable job of delivering high quality basics at a better price. Added to that Lidl’s frozen scampi is brilliant, their wines and spirits are excellent and some of their beers are not bad.
Cold cuts, meats, tinned stuff etc are really good. Ours has a onsite bakery - the croissants are brilliant at 45p.
Their ice cream is terrible (Lidl) as are their digestives!

Much as I agree about the quality of some of the Lidl/Aldi stuff, you invariably have to go to one of the bigger supermarkets to get the stuff that they don't stock. PITA.


Got another ten quid sourdough loaf given to us last night. Winner, winner, carb-fuelled dinner.

Yeah I have to agree about Lidl.

I have pretty much all the usual suspects within 10mins of my house. I have Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and Waitrose within a 15 min walk of my house and I use 'em all.

Trouble with Lidl et al is that I'm invariably left hunting for that one thing they just don't have! It doesn't even have to be that specialist IME. It's just the limitation of a small foot print innit.

I'll say it again though. Top Pretzels. Oh and they stock those gingerbread-half-way-between-a-biscuit-and-a-cake things all year round and not just at Christmas.
