Insurance renewal
I phoned up the insurer's earlier as it's approaching renewal time.
I've got the SV650 & Street Triple on seperate policies so I wanted to see what they could do for a 2 bike policy.
I was looking at £290 for the 2 bikes seperately, fully comp, with breakdown cover, carrying a pillion & commuting.I'm retiring in a couple of weeks so the commuting got dropped off the policy & I upped the mileage on the SV650 from 8000 to 9000 miles as I'll have more time to ride it. .
Everything apart from no commuting & another 1000 miles for the Suzuki stayed the same. The insurer's quoted me £182
Wasn't expecting that much of a difference, the reduction will pay for the road tax.

Re: Insurance renewal
That’s a good result, I look forward to the usual renewal price that shoots up meaning I’ll have to barter with them or go elsewhere.

Is that because they've seen the photos and videos?

Re: Insurance renewal
If they put the price up stupid amounts, I don't give them a chance to reduce it, I simply go elsewhere. If they want to keep me as a customer, don't put the price up by stupid amounts.
We've all got access to the insurance comparison sites, and they should expect people to benchmark their renewal price against the market. I don't mind a £20-30 difference between what they quote and the cheapest on the comparison site, I can't be arsed with the hassle of swapping for that minimal saving, but to put the renewal up more than that and I'm off.
It always costs companies more to get a new customer compared with keeping an existing customer. I can only assume that there are a lot of people who blindly accept the renewal quote, which more than compensates for those that go elsewhere. Or the insurance company wants to get out of the bike insurance game and thus stick their fees up so we go elsewhere. That happens quite often for a lot of insurance (my dad worked in the business all his life and that behaviour was commonplace.

Re: Insurance renewal
I’ve noticed since I got ‘expensive’ bikes the cost has gone up quite a bit.
Not really surprising going by the cost of parts but annoying as I’ve never had a single claim.
Can’t really complain as it’s still not silly prices but no longer under a hundred quid.

Re: Insurance renewal
I love the fact that as a member of IAM or RosPa who passed a test based on another volunteers assessment my premium would get a discount .....as a fully qualified and professionally assessed DVSA certified instructor it goes up as a higher risk because apparently i am at more risk of an accident as i am instructing while riding FFS
I tried looking at multibike but only a couple of insurers will even touch bike instructors so my bikes are both on separate policies.....one with max NCB and one with 2 years NCB and a single declarable accident that i dont have to declare next year .......both are the roughly the same premium each year with business cover but one is Fully comp on a 8K Ducati, the other is TFPT on a 1K Fazer. If i went back to non business use both combined would be under 200 quid

Re: Insurance renewal
Ditto... and thanks to living in London and not having a brick-built garage ("can't you build one" - in a terrace street of Victorian houses??? Are you serious) I can't even get TPFT any more. The only claim I've had was a no-fault when my partner's car was shunted into the back of my camper when they were both parked - someone lost control of her car after the dog in the back seat jumped into her lap! Premiums for the bikes still went up the following year. I haven't made a claim on a bike since 1979!Bigyin wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 11:19 pm I love the fact that as a member of IAM or RosPa who passed a test based on another volunteers assessment my premium would get a discount .....as a fully qualified and professionally assessed DVSA certified instructor it goes up as a higher risk because apparently i am at more risk of an accident as i am instructing while riding FFS

Ridiculous.

Re: Insurance renewal
Did a price comparison a couple of weeks back as insurance is due 22nd. Got a cheapest of £175 with a firm I'd not heard of.
Renewal came in yesterday with Divitts at £189. Last year cheapest I could get was £220 so at least it'd come down. Then confused emailed me as an update from when I was searching last year. Cheapest now was Bennetts at £147 So jumped on that. Will cancel Divitts tomorrow, I was gonna stay with them when the difference wasn't much but saved 40 quid.

A bloke at work has a Chinese 125 that he commutes on. He has no NCB and a provisional licence ony (he does a CBT every couple of years) and he lives in a pretty dodgy area. His insurance is £500 pa

Re: Insurance renewal
Presumably a combination of value, type of bike and mileage?
I only insure mine for 3-4k miles most years and who wants a Suzuki!!!
I hope.

Re: Insurance renewal
My car renewal came through - 690 up from 440 last year.
Talking to the "chat" it came down to 580.
Talking to a human, I explained that Comparethemarket had offered me 416 from them - they have agreed to renew at that.
WTF was the 690 about!

Re: Insurance renewal
Wow! I can safely say, I wouldn't ride.
(Ok, so I don't anyway)
But that price would have stopped me a long time ago

Re: Insurance renewal
I have to admit, when I got a quote, it almost put me off, but its all about context. One month rail ticket to London...

Re: Insurance renewal
You would be amazed at the amount of people who just accept the renewal every single year as "its what we do every year" without shopping about or haggling
I shop around every year for every policy for both cars, both bikes and house insurance .... if i accepted every renewal it would cost me an extra 500 a year at least
