Expensive Supermarkets
I don't get why people shop at them!
I have had some M&S vouchers over xmas and spent them in the shop yesterday on food.
I got one of their own brand pizza's @ £6.50! - it was not as good as the £1.99 frozen pizzas in Tesco. I spent £25 on a pizza, a pasta meal 2 ciders and 2 pints of milk!
I noticed the prices had a premium of about 25% on top the price of food at other less posh supermarkets.
Is it an ego thing, wanting to spend more money on food than you could if you just went to tesco and the likes? I just can't see the attraction, it took me 3 times longer to pay as well as there are so many toffs milling around not knowing what they are doing at the cashpoints as they must of forgot to bring their butler along to help them!

M&S own brand cleaning products are mostly cruelty free.
But then so are Lidl's now.

Re: Expensive Supermarkets
I had to do a few M&S shopping trips for my in-laws last year, apart from the presentation I didn't notice any difference in quality compared to Lidl.
I still had to queue behind idiots at the tills and the aisles were blocked by many old people pushing their trolleys very slowly.

Re: Expensive Supermarkets
Your tastebuds are fucked
I do enjoy a bit o' Lidl to be fair - their in store bakery Pretzels knock socks off everyone expext Aldi. Funny that, the two German brands have the best Pretzels
I try to stay out of Waitrose, I always spend way more than I planned if I go in there. They also sell loads of stuff which other places just don't have.

Re: Expensive Supermarkets
Not in mine.
We dropped several hundred quid between Waitrose and M&S over Xmas, it ain't all that, if I had paid with my own money I reckon I'd have been slightly miffed, hell now you come to remind me I am pissed, I could've spent those vouchers in Halfords instead.
They both do limited lines that are better than the usual fodder, but they're few n far between and not worth the mark up in my books

I don't think Waitrose et al are any better for what you might call "ingredients". Veg, raw meat, milk, that sort of thing.
They have by far the best in store bakery IMO (Pretzels notwithstanding).

Re: Expensive Supermarkets
TBH i have had a few things that were better than tesco etc, their cider is pretty decent but you pay a massive premium for it. Not really worth the extra money IMO.

Re: Expensive Supermarkets
M&S butter is superb, everything else we've had from there is no better than Tesco / Sainsbury finest range, Waitrose is a waste of space and time.

Re: Expensive Supermarkets
This really... the food that's no simply just a branded Kellogs/Muller/whatever, it's just simply 'better' than the other Supermarkets. It's also a nicer place to shop...
Maybe that makes me a snob, it certainly may feel like it at times.... But, that's how it is.

All you need to do is blame the prices on Thatcher, Brexit, Trans Rights or Biden and you'll be fine.

Re: Expensive Supermarkets
Our M&S isn't a nice place to shop, it's full of rich pensioners, they're rude and pushy, I'd rather be over the road at Tesco with the people who work for a living.weeksy wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 2:10 pmThis really... the food that's no simply just a branded Kellogs/Muller/whatever, it's just simply 'better' than the other Supermarkets. Re: Expensive Supermarkets
Shopping here in Lidl isn't as cringeworthy as shopping at the one in Aylesbury

Re: Expensive Supermarkets
Morrison's Louth, hands down 'winner' IME.
The Lidl near me (might actually be an Aldi, I really can't remember ) ain't too bad to be fair. I can guarantee you though, if I went in there right now there'd be someone buying four 3 litre plastic bottles of Cider. There always is. There own brand fancy crisps are the best I've tried from any supermarket too. Plus, who doesn't love the middle of Lidl?
I enjoyed Brew Dog's response to Aldi's knock off of Punk IPA ("anti establishment IPA" ) too.

Re: Expensive Supermarkets
Not at my local UK one. The fruit, veg and fresh produce is way better at the local Tesco than Waitrose. The only frozen stuff I buy is peas and beans and I'm guessing they come from the same supply chain as Waitrose stuff.

Re: Expensive Supermarkets
Should've gone for the 'Pizza Night' deal*. 2 pizzas, 2 sides for £12. (Including a pizza with white chocolate sauce, chocolate drops, biscuit balls and marshmallows ).
Some of their 'Dine in' meal deals are a) good value - last year one included the food and a bottle of wine and b) knowing they still make a profit on them, indicative that the ingredients etc cost about £3
