Apparently storage is £10 a day and recovery £150 but that's from the web and i've not had anything confirmed.

To charge storage for any time before they told you they had it and for any period when they won't release it is nothing short of a scam.

It is close to a scam anyway. I went to pick a bike up a few years back and the fees are set by the police, the breaker that had it charged a lot less if you called them direct. When I found out what it was costing me I was straight down there with broken ribs and gaffer tape, if I couldn't get it running I'd have dragged it round the corner and left it.

Exactly what the Couch says. You let them know you can collect it asap and that charges only apply from the time they tell you they have released the bike, not from what it was taken for forensics "testing" etc... I had the same and they told me the Weds I could collect the bike, I was there on the Thursday and then they tried to hit me with weeks of storage charges. I told them to march! Thankfully, an official there was on LondonBikers and recognised me and released the bike with no charge as I had arrived the following day etc...

So give them a bell and lay it out. Helps if you know people too.

No, it wasnt insured, so the insurance have no stake in it.

Well that's something I didn't know, ie write-off categories are purely an insurance thing. I suppose it couldn't be otherwise, now that I think about it, but I'd always assumed a bike that had been badly crash damaged would have something in the log book to say so. Seems not.

Whole industry out there for selling and repairing unrecorded vehicles. Catagories are only for insurance companies obvs. If you were a new driver and ditched your sub 10k value car, with no one else involved, it may work out better to not claim and sell your unrecorded damage car, rather than lose your NCD and get loaded for the next few years.

Just got a call from the Met. The bike is at Charlton pound and is described as "rolling". Trying to organise recovery now and will pop up there tomorrow lunchtime to have a look at it etc.

At the pound now. Been here over an hour and it’s not a big queue. Slow process to say the least! It occurs to me I can’t expect a local recovery guy to do this! So I’ll have to come back and get it released snd wait outside with it! Ho hum!

The company whose pound it is might give a reasonable quote to drop it round to you, as long as they can do it quickly and not rack up a few more day's storage.

Well that was eventful. I got to see the bike but pictures are forbidden? Anyway, its clearly been in daily use as it has a phone holder, handlebar muffs and a rear rack fitted! Keyless ignition didn't work , presumably bypassed with a ebay kit, so the steering lock is stuck on. That makes recovery harder of course as it cant just be pushed into the back of a van, it needs a skid on the front wheel and winch? I'm happy to break the steering lock as it wont go back on the road easily as chassis number has been ground off and its identity was only traced through datatag. Soem panels are damaged, front tyre is very worn on one side. Termi has been replaced with standard one etc. But I think it'll make more as salvage than it'll cost to recover? CHarges are currently £190 and increase by £10 a day!
