Yeah, when I went to Cyprus for my niece's wedding some years back, all the houses had water heaters on the roof. I really don't understand why solar PV isn't more common in sunny climes where solar gain is abundant. It's free energy (after the install costs, obvs...)

I can imagine something similar in the UK if enough people get solar. It might be a bit more subtle but nobody wants to pay for power stations to sit unused for 8 months of the year, ready for the odd cloudy week.
If only this battery revolution would hurry up and get here then the problem could go away.

I've just had my quote in for the new tariff from March as our fixed term ends then. From £79/month to £161/month for no reason other than the costs of everything going up! But hold on, gas is at same prices as before, so nothing is "up" in actual wholesale generation of energy. But EDF do want their profits to stay up. Guess I'll be wearing that cassock all the time now...

We've had 4kW solar system since early 2012, just before the feed in tariffs were again reduced.

We now have "Commodity Charges" on the gas bill. It's added per therm.

You must have long months - our 1930s house is currently (-5C outside right now) about £5 per day for gas and electric.

Ours was £220 all in for 25/12 to 24/01.

Nominally we should be able to take advantage of this "don't use power between 5 and 6" thing, but I'm not sure how to set it up. I should probably look into it

Normally three of us, separate rooms, all working until 5:30-6, so not a lot to switch off!

Looking at my smart meter logs, teh vast majority of our juice use is between sorta 17:30 and 19:00. That's the electric oven and the dishwasher. The dishwasher is easy to change, it's got a built in delayed start function so we could just run it at 2AM or whatever. Cooking might require a bit more thought, but I'm sure we could figure it out.

Can't really eat later, Baby D comes home from school ravenous and needs to be in bed by about half 7.

I agree. The polluters should pay. They must and they will and they should. And they are already to an extent. That includes me and rightly so.
