Re: Julian's YPVS money pit
Not much to see yet, apart from the horrible wiring, it looks like it did but with a different tail and no seat, once I get the new exhausts on I'll post some more pics.
I'm going to have to make a wiring loom for it as I'm not paying £400 for a repo one, that's 2 days pay, I can make one in under 15 hours.

Re: Julian's YPVS money pit
I'm happy with my old bikes, when I was into new bikes (20 years ago) I'd buy a replacement one every couple of years, spending at least £2K each time, and a load of money on bolt on tat in between, in the last 5 years I've bought 5 bikes, 1 for £500 (sold for £600), 1 for £720, 1 for £1200, 1 for £2000 and 1 for £2200, still got the last 4, I've completely rebuilt a 4 cylinder 4 stroke with a little help (something I was scared to do before), stripped a bike completely and rebuilt it to the spec I want, made a whole load of friends and done a load of trackdays.
Classic bikes are great for me.

Re: Julian's YPVS money pit
I'm going to strip the top end to have a look at it, the engines got to come out of the frame because the frame needs painting so I'll do it then, I used to be able to take the top end off a YPVS in under an hour, but I haven't stripped one for 25 years so might take me a little longer than that.
I suspect the standard pipes I've bought will have most of the internals rotted away so I'm not to worried about them being overly restrictive, I will be pulling the baffles out and removing the first part of the baffle, this doesn't make the bike massively noisier, but does give a slight performance increase.
I don't know if the engine is tuned or not, it has a different number to the frame so is not the original engine, though it would be weird to drill all the drain plugs for lock wire and it not be tuned, the casings also have the drillings for the lock wire to go to, it looks a very professional job.
I don't think the engine has done many miles because the clutch doesn't rattle and there's no noise at all from the crank.
A TZ crank should be stronger than an LC crank, from memory the centre is splined on TZs but not on LCs, I think YPVS cranks are also splined, but I've never taken one apart so I don't know this for certain, air cooled RDs are definitely splined, and the standard TZ crank is the same as an air cooled RD one.

Re: Julian's YPVS money pit
Never heard of that, but I wasn't massively involved with TZs (though I suspect I will be as a friend has just bought a TZ350 and he's a bit hopeless with two strokes), my first YPVS, which was tuned and I did loads of miles on, the main bearings wore out on the crank and you could feel the play in the flywheel end of the crank, I can't remember anyone ever having crank problems apart from ones caused by wear or the bike seizing, the problems I remember people having with LCs and Power Valves were always top end problems caused by weak mixture or running the clearances too tight, the loose slappy, engines never went wrong.

Updates including video on Facebook, when I try to attach on here it says my file is too large.
Anyway stock pipes fitted, I don't think it's much quieter, or runs much different, spannies for sale £150 if anyone wants them.

And how large is the file you're trying to attach ? Is it not hosted on Flickr/Imgur/etc ?Julian_Boolean wrote: ↑Sat Sep 19, 2020 3:30 pm Updates including video on Facebook, when I try to attach on here it says my file is too large.

Re: Julian's YPVS money pit
My phone makes it sound worse than it is, I think it's the quietest LC engine I've ever had, even the clutch is quiet.

Re: Julian's YPVS money pit
Didn't you mention that you had a spare set of bodywork for the FZR?

Re: Julian's YPVS money pit
Have done much on this thread for a little while but another thread has reminded me to add an update.
I am currently gathering YPVS parts from the length and breadth of the UK, I've got a brand new replica fairing and screen, gasket kits, airbox, footrest mounts and a load of little bits waiting to go on.
I haven't had much chance to take it apart, but hopefully I'll start soon, I was going to get the frame coated red, but as this meant the bike would have to be white and red, I've decided to have the frame black so that it goes with any colour bodywork.
Hopefully I'll have sold the spannies and rearsets, giving me more money to waste.

Re: Julian's YPVS money pit
I'll add some photos soon, last night I fitted foot pegs, foot peg plates and the rear brake pedal, I also fitted the grab rail, I need to get hold of a gear lever and linkage from some where, the weird bolt thing that holds on the footrest plate and also acts as a pivot for the gear lever cost me £20 for a new one, what's annoying is there are two second hand ones on ebay at the moment for £10.
Plan is to sort of dry build it before taking it all apart to get the frame painted. Rear light has been ordered, I'm looking for the bracket that supports it, though I'm going to have to work out how I mount it because the rear 50mm has been chopped off my frame rails, no idea why as the weight saving would have been marginal, and they also welded on half an iron mongers shop to support the TZ seat that was on it.
It's progressing surprisingly well for one of my project bikes - but I'm not being a tight arse on this one.
