Here's the hazard perception test

Post by Bustaspoke »

Seeing as the other test got some interest, here's the Hazard perception test from the same site.
I passed this one,not surprising given the hazards I've encountered over the years :wtf:

Acksherley ... many experienced riders and drivers struggle with the HPT, down the differentiation of potential danger changing to actual danger. 'Developing' in DVSA speak.

A reasonable HPT test method is click once when you think something might be a hazard, then once again ASAP when it 'develops' - effectively when you would need to take urgent action.

You scored 12 out of a possible 15.

To pass the test, you must score at least 9 out of 15.

I think with these test things,it's learning what is expected of you. There was stuff I should have clicked on,I suppose, but some of the 'hazards' were pretty tame.

CBA. Done it fairly recently, and failed miserably. I always click too soon.

Perhaps not.

There used to be (I've not checked recently @Bigyin to confirm?) just one scoreable hazard in each clip, and two in a single clip, during a set for a single test.

If you click too often / randomly, you can be penalised and fail.

They have less to do with hazard perception and more to do with learning when they want you to click (IMHO)

See what I mean (other thread)? You're all experienced motorcyclists, and you can't get a decent score (apart from Skub - 12? fiddle!). It's training people NOT to react till it's too late. I think that's positively dangerous and a Bad Thing (@1066 and all that).

Yup. I tried it some years ago and same thing. With experience you click 'too early' so it's either a) not fit for purpose or b) only for people with little or no experience on the road. If you are, for example, a very experienced car driver, you're stuffed until you forget all about being experienced and learn to react late/game the system. It's

9/15

TBH the biggest hazard was the bloke in the hi-viz on the bike in front of me

The one with the milk float seemed to be stuffed with red-herrings early on - for example there was an Audi(?) on the right with its rear end hanging close to the road which I thought was as much of a potential hazard as the float

8 - I did it twice and both times only scored on two out of three because I clicked too many times!! I clicked on things I'd notice that would make me aware of a potential problem. guess they don't actually want that!

But its introduction was associated with an 11% drop in new driver crashes!

<mandyricedaviesmode> They would say that, wouldn't they?<\mrdm>

Probably coincides with the 11% drop in test passes thanks to a shonky hazard awareness test. .

I've said that ever since I popped along to the DSA's roadshow where they were demo'ing the haz per test before it went live.

I promptly failed - scored about 2 or 3 if I remember right.
the
I had a clip with a kiddie on a cycle riding down a path across a playing field that intersected with the road ahead... not surprisingly I clicked on him when he was still a couple of seconds from the end of the path and moved on to clicking on other hazards ahead - there was a bus passing a parked vehicle so very close to the centre line IIRC.

I got 0 for that video, and the chappie helpfully explained that I was clicking too soon on a 'potential hazard', and that I needed to wait till the bike was actually on the pavement - that was now a 'developing hazard'. But if I waited 1 more second, when kiddie bunny-hopped his bike into the road in front of the camera vehicle, that was now too late and an 'actual hazard' because the driver would have to take immediate evasive action.

I argued the toss on that at the time, and like you, I'd still argue that waiting for the potential hazard to develop is leaving it far too late.

Has anyone ever said explicitly that drivers or riders, when on the road, should wait before reacting?

Unless 'yes', you're arguing into a void.

That's my understanding of it as well as all clips have one hazard, one clip has 2 ;)

Last time i did a mock one i failed miserably as i clicked too early ...... this one i scraped through with 10

Thats my entire experience of hazard perception tests
