SUZUKI GSX-S1000GT (2022 - on) Review MCN

You could say the new Suzuki GSX-S1000GT is simply a collection of parts pinched from other models. That’s partly true, but they’ve taken simple idea and executed it so brilliantly, it has the makings of an instant classic.

t’s an honest-to-goodness road bike-shaped sports tourer, with styling that finally moves the game on for them, even if its looks are greatest hits of well… you decide.

Unlike the adventure bikes and tall roaders that have taken the place of sports tourers in recent years, the GSX-S1000GT doesn’t have dual-purpose tyres, dirt bike wheels or long travel suspension.

The Suzuki is for smiley Sunday morning tarmac and big road trips, just like the Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX it’s gunning for. We could just be seeing the return of the sports tourer here and that’ll be music to the ears of many.

Suzuki’s GSX-S1000GT is a bike you just hope will be as good as it seems and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s effortlessly quick, comfortable, practical, reassuring and thanks to its K5-derived engine, exciting, too - exactly what a sports tourer should be.

Its crisp colour dash, quickshifter, cruise control, smooth grunt and peachy throttle will make journeys, near and far a breeze and even better is the price. It isn’t exactly loose change, but is superb value for the all the metal, tech and performance you get for your money.

Brakes are slightly wooden, but work well and its tyres could be better, but they’re minor and easily fixable blemishes on Suzuki’s best bike in a very long time.

The GSX-S1000GT uses the same basic chassis layout as the current GSX-S1000 (and the version before, including the ‘F’): a twin spar ali frame (with a new subframe and pannier mounts) and swingarm, fully adjustable KYB forks, Brembos and a basic rear shock with preload and rebound damping adjustment.

Suzuki sportsbikes always handle sweetly and the GT is no exception. It’s stable, unflappable at full lean and lives for fast A-road and motorway curves.

It hunkers closer to the tarmac, compared to other all-rounders, so a sports tourer like the GT is more stable and precise at speed and has a lower seat, making it easy to get your feet down.

Its smoother bodywork creates far less of an ear-blasting wind roar, too. The screen is non-adjustable but does a great job of keeping off the elements and there’s also a 70mm taller touring screen available (£193). Heated grips are also a £395 extra.

It’s also supremely comfortable with a natural stretch to its high and wide bars. Legroom is generous, rider and pillion seats are plush and you’re nicely isolated from vibes, thanks to rubber-mount bars and rubber-topped footpegs.

During the GT’s launch riding some of the best roads in Scotland, wet and dry, the GT is a joy. We saw an indicated 43mpg on the dash (Suzuki claimed 46mpg), which should give a full to dry tank range of 180-miles.

Personally (and I am a bit biased) I like them and would happily have that over the naked I think for added practicality, although I prefer the looks of mine. But it's a chunk of change more than mine is so not gonna happen. Couple of mags tested it against the Kwak Z1000SX and rated the Kwak as more refined/nicer built and so it won the test but the Suzuki was more raw/sporty which would suit me. Nice bike I think although it is parts bin.

I'm all in favour of more sports tourers.

Charging nearly £400 for heated grips is a bit rich though. (Should be standard fittings for an ST anyway).

Whilst I'm sure this is a great bike, these type of bikes leave me cold. At least with adventure bikes, they have a style of sorts, but these type bikes look like sportbikes with luggage cobbled on. FortunatelY I have no need of such a thing.

It's ugly, apart from that it'll be a good bike

I demo'd one in September and thought it was excellent.

MCN's review is spot on. It's a lot better looking in the flesh than photos - the blue especially is nicer IRL. The only niggles I had were that the wind protection seemed poor especially considering the huge swathes of fairing up front, the brakes were good but lacking in feel and It felt a bit short-geared.

There was also a 'year with' vid from MCN yesterday:

I'd seriously consider one in a few years if I'm doing more longer trips but for now it's way overspecced for what I need.

I'm glad that the sports-tourer category is at last getting some love, and I'm sure it's very competent and probably a lot of fun, but the styling is just awful. Were they trying for a radar signature similar to a stealth fighter/bomber? That's the only reason I can see for the chaotic mix of fairing angles.

I've just realised that the blue in the the MCN articles is different to the one I demo'd so instead I'll say that I think the other blue is nicer :)

One of the most important things for me is a fairing that works.
Why put fairings on that don't do the job right? It's easy really.

Might have just been me - MCN said it does a good job and the dealer seemed suprised when I mentioned it after the demo.

Putting a non-adjustable screen on it is a bit 'budget' knowing how sensitive these things are for different height riders. They don't have to go the whole hog and make it electrically adjustable (although that's preferable) just allow for a bit of tweaking.

I don't mind the looks and the GSXR donkey will be a peach. I can't ever see me buying another heavy bike, but it has it's place.

Incidentally it'll be up against the ZH2 SX,the supercharged model,as I understand the Z1000 lump in the current SX is being phased out.

The poor man's GSXR1100. Used 1052 carbs on the 1127 so had shit loads of grunt.

The old 1100F is better looking than that new 1000. I'm sure it's all singing and dancing but it looks like an accident in the Lego warehouse.

Fair to say it looks even worse with a straight on side angle! Looks like it needs clipping together! :wtf:

Looks like it's the secret version they ride about on during pre production road testing, where they cobble on a load of faux bodywork to hide the look. Shame really.
