I always reckon on prices up here being 50% - 150% more expensive than in the valley. And I'm not somewhere 'posh'!!

I found Reims to be fairly expensive. The beer was cheap though, from the supermarket and 2.35E for 750ml bottles. Other stuff was expensive though and prices were definitely more than I've paid in previous trips, the last being this past summer.

I notice the barristers got their pay rise without anyone having to strike, 15% they got and all they do is sit on a chair wearing stupid wig, they are probably already earning 5 times what a postal or train driver makes too.gremlin wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 3:53 pm As an amusingly ironic side story, the staff at the Royal College of Nursing have been offered a 4.5% pay rise and now, as most are members of the GMB union, are threatening to walk out on strike, possibly thwarting the nurses' strike, who are demanding a 19.2% pay rise.
Ps. I have just been informed of my pay rise. It was some way off 19.2%, I can tell you.

You don't think they may have had to do a bit of studying, learning and work to get to the stage where they sit in a chair in a wig ?Greenman wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 9:07 amI notice the barristers got their pay rise without anyone having to strike, 15% they got and all they do is sit on a chair wearing stupid wig, they are probably already earning 5 times what a postal or train driver makes too.gremlin wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 3:53 pm As an amusingly ironic side story, the staff at the Royal College of Nursing have been offered a 4.5% pay rise and now, as most are members of the GMB union, are threatening to walk out on strike, possibly thwarting the nurses' strike, who are demanding a 19.2% pay rise.

Some people earn more than others... That's the world. A bloke driving a train requires say 3 on a scale of 1/10 in terms of brains.... a barrister maybe an 8.... Can you see why the 8 may earn more than a 3 ?

In the first 3 years of being a barrister the median pay is £12 200 per annum, hardly rich is it.Greenman wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 9:07 amI notice the barristers got their pay rise without anyone having to strike, 15% they got and all they do is sit on a chair wearing stupid wig, they are probably already earning 5 times what a postal or train driver makes too.gremlin wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 3:53 pm As an amusingly ironic side story, the staff at the Royal College of Nursing have been offered a 4.5% pay rise and now, as most are members of the GMB union, are threatening to walk out on strike, possibly thwarting the nurses' strike, who are demanding a 19.2% pay rise.

Of course they would have. My argument is why did they get the 15% pay rise without any issues when others who are working harder more physical jobs do not get anywhere close to that figure even after striking!
It just seems in my eyes that anyone coming from a privileged background who will be or is earning large amounts of money always get the benefits of pay rises etc and anyone from a lesser background just get's treated like shit.
Maybe they need to keep the barristers happy so the rich can continue to push through their corrupt regime through the courts!

Re: Cost of Living Crisis
I thought the driving force behind the barrister's demands were those doing legal aid/family law stuff. Their incomes are down in the barrista range and they've spent the same time/money studying as those in chambers or whatever they call it. If the returns are so small it puts people off doing it which reduces the access to law if you aren't rich.
In terms of ratings 1-10 though, the main attribute required is a dogged persistence to slog through case law and remember it. It is one of the most boring things possible to study.

Shall we mention that Rail Worker's pay increases have actually outstripped the UK average for the last 10 years?

Because they're clever, and educated. It's always easier to ask for more when you're seen as being cleverer, more important etc.. I'd bet you brain surgeons are getting offered a bit more too, because, you know, they're brain surgeons.Greenman wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 9:26 amOf course they would have. I think nurses are worth more than they're paid for sure, but that's the world we live in.
Don't forget, you can become a barrister irresepctive of your personal upbringing, they were not born rich, they've just educated themselves and got that job... Then become more well-off because of it, but they could easily have started off on a council estate.
You're missing the whole point from being born wealthy, to making yourself wealthy through life-choices..

Re: Cost of Living Crisis
The RCN is an organisation that acts as professional standards body, training organiser, etc. for nurses, midwives and other medical professionals. Crucially, they also carry out the role of trade union for these individuals. In order to function, the RCN employs about a thousand staff to carry out these different roles, most of whom belong to an actual trade union, in this case the GMB. These staff are somewhat disgruntled at being offered 4.5% by their employer, the RCN, and are therefore planning their own strike.Yorick wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 9:15 amThat made no sense.gremlin wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 3:53 pm As an amusingly ironic side story, the staff at the Royal College of Nursing have been offered a 4.5% pay rise and now, as most are members of the GMB union, are threatening to walk out on strike, possibly thwarting the nurses' strike, who are demanding a 19.2% pay rise.
Depending on the severity of this action, it may well be that the RCN will not be able to organise further strikes for its members, the nurses, midwives etc.
Make sense?

You wanna look at how much Royal Mail workers get. No wonder the guy delivering my letters in minus 5 weather wearing shorts always looks so cheery.

All this says to me is that I need to join a Union.
-IS- there a Union for sad-act desk jockeys? Maybe I should start one? Get on the telly. We could all take our keyboards and throw them out the window.

Re: Cost of Living Crisis
I may be illogical but I'm happier blatting along at 100mph+ in many tons of metal, knowing that the driver is a reasonably well paid, well trained professional than a 'cheapest we can get' type of person doing a job with a high staff turnover.
(I certainly wouldn't want a barrister driving ).
