Banks - A Very Long Read. Make Yourself Comfortable
Banks - A Very Long Read. Make Yourself Comfortable
As I’ve not been on for sometime - serious health problems - I thought I would regale you with you some of my dealings with what was my main current account provider - The Co-op Bank. The so called ‘ethical bank’? I hope you are now sitting comfortably. I’ll try not to be boring - lol.
I’ll put aside my having to wait over one and a half hours to speak to somebody over an urgent matter (paid for call charges in excess of £20) or the three day wait for a reply from their so called internal messaging system.
Right, here we go. My first problem started when I attempted to buy an expensive pair of binoculars for £700.00 My Co-op Credit card was rejected five times. I then tried to use my Debit Card which was also rejected. This was at 22:30 so nobody available at the bank to find out why. 24 Hour Credit Card hotline didn’t have a clue. As a last resort I tried my Capital One Credit Card - Whoosh! Straight through without any problems. Meantime...lots of apologetic emails to the binocular vendor who had his online payment system full of Not Paid notices.
Next, I had a major expense for a front door - £1,500.00. Given what happened with the binoculars and after a visit to the branch to find out why the block, I thought it would be wise to visit the branch and advise them of my intended purchase. And so I trekked down to the bank and spoke to the manager. They know me but as a wise precaution I took my passport, driving licence and all my account details. I advised the manager that I wanted a payment made today via a Fast Pay Bank Transfer. I showed her the invoice given to me when the door had been fitted on the Saturday previous. It had the installers full details including his bank details for the transfer of funds. No problem she said, I’ll put it through today. Off I go home quite happy knowing all the i’s had been dotted and the t’s crossed and I had honoured my promise to the installer.
When I returned home I logged on to my account and there it was, my account had been debited for £1,500.00 Great news! I was especially pleased because I had told the installer I would pay him as soon as the bank was open on the Monday. The following day - Tuesday - the installer telephoned me and said he had not received the money. I told him to give it 24 hours because maybe it was being processed and was showing as a debit on my account. I told him I had made a personal visit to the bank to avoid any problems. I checked my account online again and yes, it showed it had been debited from my account.
Wednesday, repeat the above but this time the installer was a bit pissed off. I sent him an email and an edited screen shot of my account showing the payment as well as explaining everything and told him if it had not gone through tonight I would go back to the bank tomorrow. I hoped this would pacify him. Thursday arrives and off I trek to the bank. Yes, the manager told me, she had put it through when I had made my visit in person on the Monday. By this time I was seriously angry. I told the installer I had been to the branch and they told me they had processed the payment. He said he had not received it. And yet again more apologetic emails to him.
Friday comes along. My account, yet again, shows I had been debited for £1,500.00 for the door. But no, it hadn’t. And so another visit to the bank. This time I was f......g fuming. Hours wasted, unnecessary journeys, emails, checking on-line and crucially, my reputation. If I tell somebody I will pay them on x date then I will honour my promise as I would expect them to honour theirs. The installer had every right to think I was pulling off a scam. The Co-op bank made my name dirt.
When I got to the bank I demanded to speak to the manager. I told her I wanted an answer now or else I will close my account today and kick up a fuss with the Ombudsman. She said she was sorry and told me she thought the Fraud Section may have blocked it but wasn’t sure.
Now read this carefully. I said can you contact them now so you can find out while I wait? I said I found it disturbing that the actions of a manger should be overrode by another section of the bank without telling him or her the reasons why. And now, the bizarre part. She told me that they don’t have a direct line to the Fraud Section. They have to use the same line as customers! But...she told me I could use their telephone - so very kind of her. 40 minutes later some clown from the Fraud Section answers. Not unlike the clown who had put a stop to my binocular purchase who blamed the block on Visa Europe!
Yes, this moron said, we put a stop on the payment. She couldn’t explain why it kept showing up as paid on my account. She then started asking questions. Do you know the door installer? I answer of course I f......g do! They are a long established local business with a highly regarded reputation. They are V.A.T. Registered. They have a fleet of vans. I told her the business was within spitting distance from the bank. The manager could walk to them in minutes. And, I sigh heavily, she asks, it wasn’t a door-to-door salesman who sold it to you? No it f.....g wasn’t. Do you always buy doors from them? But of course I do, I buy one a week except for bank holidays and Xmas when I buy double the amount. Stunned silence. Okay, thank you, I shall now put your payment through. We have to be very careful on behalf of our customers. Oh really says I, to her, or do you mean your are looking after your own backs? You are shit scared in case you have to pay out because of poor security and inefficiency. Never have I known a bank that undermines their manager let alone without telling her and then the truly insane situation of not having a direct line! Madness!
I closed the conversation with this. I told her I have been a Co-op member since I was a teenager. You are not the Co-op I know. You have had lots of scandals including your cocaine smoking crystal meth ex-Chairman. You advertise yourselves as ‘ethical’. You are not. You are not part of the Co-op Movement. Bank members no longer have a say. Your ethics are light years away from what they once were. You sold out. You are now owned by American Hedge Funds. Give me the names of each individual hedge fund investor and show me each of their portfolios. I’ll bet you £10,000.00 they have investments in non ethical products/services for that is how they make their money - as well as asset stripping. You are therefore not 100% ethical.
On that day, I told the Co-op bank to shove their ‘ethical bank’ up their arse as I was closing my account and going for a more customer friendly provider where the shareholders are the account holders.
Phew!
You want to know how really bad they are. Go to Trust Pilot and read the comments. Their rating is: Bad. Seems like nothing has changed including hours waiting on the phone.
There was a man on Trust Pilot who could not for the life of him understand why they didn’t send him an internal message as to why they had put a block on a payment. No, like myself, he had to go through endless time wasting hoops.
And so ends my saga with the bank that doesn’t know it’s arse from its elbow. Not fit for purpose. Certainly not deserving of the Co-op name and of its long and proud true ethical history.
God, the time lost has gone forever. It’s only when you are very unwell that you appreciate how much time really matters. Time to share with your loved ones, your friends and the nice folk that really matter. Don’t allow your precious time to be wasted by incompetent morons or people with name badges operating in a structure that can only be described as: truly f.......g terrible!

@Phoenix that sounds horrific. Incompetence piled on top of mendacity. I did not realise that the Co-op bank was essentially a fraudulent operation using a once-revered name. I will certainly avoid.
There is no cloud, just somebody else's computer.
Re: Banks - A Very Long Read. Make Yourself Comfortable
I’m afraid so. It is so very wrong to confuse the name with other branches of the Co-operative Movement such as the many small corner shops. There’s a larger Coop Shop near me that has a cafe. They have kept their prices the same despite inflation. Example, tea and two toast £2.00 in a comfy cafe.mangocrazy wrote: ↑Sat Dec 10, 2022 12:01 am @Phoenix that sounds horrific. The Co-Op bank has sold its soul to the devil. Brought on by themselves. Evidence aplenty on Trust Pilot.
“The bank can trace its roots back 145 years to the Co-op, which is loosening its relationship with the lender and in 2020 will sever an agreement to promote the bank’s services to its customers.”

Re: Banks - A Very Long Read. Make Yourself Comfortable
Have just been reading their 2022/23 annual accounts - Oh get a life you silly old sod! - and came across this:
Capita colleagues set to join the Bank in 1Q 23.
‘Capita’ known as ‘Crapita’ have/had got their mitts in almost everything from car parks to local government pensions and the contentious medical fitness to work exams. Now the Co-op Bank. See Wikipedia or Private Eye for more.
https://www.co-operativebank.co.uk/pdf ... ation.pdf
I think I will write to The Guardian and ask them to do a follow up to their original story. They will have the brains and the resources.

Much that I've wanted to hate Barclays over the years they never seem to suffer the stupid problems I've heard about other banks, the only complaint I can think of is being unable to pay a cheque in that's over a grand.
I had a payment to a plumber blocked like that last year, it took five minutes to phone up and get it cleared.

Re: Banks - A Very Long Read. Make Yourself Comfortable
Had multiple problems this year with TSB. I went to Reading to buy a car. I rang TSB and said if I buy this car, can I pay for it using my debit card as online transfers are capped at less than I need to pay. They said yes we'll put a note on the file. At Reading I found out that there is a floor limit on debit card transactions which the balance would have far exceeded and they (the car dealers) only accept bank transfers anyway and expected my bank to have told me that. I can't pay that much in one day due to the daily limit, so I have to return the 90 miles home only to come back again 2 days later when I've paid the balance in daily transactions online. To be fair, TSB would have paid it all in one transaction at branch but I couldn't get into one due to work commitments.
I bought my scooter online. Paid the (non refundable) delivery fee of £70 up front with the balance to be paid on delivery after inspection etc. Guy turns up I look at a scoot and go ahead but TSB won't let the transfer go through, despite it being paid to a business account and the details all matched and of course, i'd paid them £70 the day before. The transaction had been referred to their fraud dept and it took me, literally, 3/4 of an hour to get it through and resolved. Even then it was only paid because I had actual sight of goods and wasn't waiting for it to arrive, that they agreed to pay it. Despite it being my money they also have liability in the transaction so they get to call how and when I spend my money.
TSB have a in branch counter limit for cash withdrawals. I needed to withdraw £5k the other week, so I rang TSB and spent another 1/4 of an hour on the phone to the ever helpful chap, who asked me all the questions of why and to whom I was paying etc. Finally satisfied i wasn't being robbed or held to ransom, he rang my bank to make the arrangement. But he then couldn't get through to my branch to confirm it, but assured me he would keep trying and only ring me back if there was a problem. I get to the bank the next day and no one knows anything about it. I get the same questions about what I'm withdrawing it for and am i withdrawing it under duress and is anyone waiting outside branch for me? I'm kinda impressed but also pissed off that I must now look old and frail!
I think there is so much online fraud now that banks are super protective and cautious and I guess they need to be. Plus around here we have a massive problem with pikeys ripping old people off and taking them to the bank to get cash, so I did appreciate the counter withdrawal protection. I haven't changed banks yet, as I kinda get the need for all the security precautions, but it is frustrating and can be embarrassing!

Another Barclays customer. They are not perfect, but better the devil you know. Mostly it works, when it doesn't a phone call usually fixes it quickly.

In ye good old days idiots didnt get bank accounts, and bank fraud was almost unknown.
Now everyone has a bank account, many of them cannot not be trusted, and many others are just plain stupid. Fools and their bank balance are easily parted.

How many times must people read about these scams, yet fall for them?
Her gripe is that Revolut did not stop the transactions which were not typical of her previous behaviour.
Worth bearing in mind that Revolut are based in Lithuania and are not party to UK bank schemes. I have a card, but I keep next to feck all on it.

Never had any bother with natwest.
Occasionally I need to approve online purchases, but it's done through their app and takes seconds, I've bought vehicles for £5k, £10k & £15k with my debit card which all only took one phone call to approve at the time of the transaction

Re: Banks - A Very Long Read. Make Yourself Comfortable
Lloyds seem OK, I get a code sent to me to approve payments and not had any bother thus far, paid 10k on debit card for a car and transferred 8k for a bike without issue.
They did cancel my CC once, I got a phone message saying my card was stopped and to call a number. I assumed this was a scam so called lloyds separately and sure enough someone had made 3 Just Eat payments in quick succession, I'd never used Just Eat and the 3 payments got flagged and instantly stopped the CC. They sent me a new card and refunded the payments. So that seemed to work well.
Other than that I don't contact my bank much, thankfully

Then revolut sent her messages (as they do for every transaction) and she chose to ignore them, and that's revolut's fault!
So far this month, my Netflix, Disney and mobile subscriptions have all had their payments refused and I need to enter my details again to make payment.
I'm not that daft, I used my wife's details!

Re: Banks - A Very Long Read. Make Yourself Comfortable
I ended up with them refunding me a couple of hundred quid.
Then they cancelled the account.
Started it up again.
Did they reduce my monthly payments?
No, of course not. So I asked for another refund.
Money refunded. Account cancelled. But this time with an innovative twist: threatening me with being cut off and legal action for not paying.
Even bland can be a type of character

Re: Banks - A Very Long Read. Make Yourself Comfortable
Just for balance, if a payment is held for sanction checking for AML purposes, it is illegal for a bank employee to advise you. That could constitute 'tipping off' which carries a seven year maximum sentence and an unlimited fine. It wouldn't surprise me if Co-op ensure compliance by default by just not letting the customer-facing staff in on the info.
Doesn't excuse the piss poor service, mind.

Re: Banks - A Very Long Read. Make Yourself Comfortable
AML is annoying me right now, I want to overpay my mortgage but the building society want to see proof of where I got the funds from. I can show them a savings account balance but can't prove where it all came from.
I can't even give them money.
