8 months suspended for killing someone whilst driving car on wrong side of road. What a decent , honest world we live in.
However, Harry's parents seemed happy enough with it. ???

I don't think they're happy about it, more like recognising that it's the best they're going to get.

Ever driven/ridden in Europe? Ever pulledd away on to the wrong sideof the road?
I know the road wherr that happened. Straightish 1/2 mile from the gates, then some completely blind double bends.
Careless driving, yes. Anything else, no.

I know that road too, I used to get stuck behind base traffic in the morning all the time. You come out of a US base which looks American and then straight onto roads with no obvious giveaways you're not in Amercia. Cept the width and the weather maybe
Just a tragic mistake, I'm sure lots of people on here have made much worse ones and got away with it. There but for the grace of god and all that.

I admit to (only twice, once in UK, one in France) being momentarily confuddled, it happens, it's not good.

Folk may have thought more kindly of Sacoolas if she hadn't done a runner.

Re: In todays news...
I wonder if they have a " keep on left" sign or similar on camp exit. ?? Driving on the wrong side of the road could be seen as dangerous surely and then to directly cause the death of an innocent young man because of this.
It's a sham, nothing less.

Even Death by Dangerous Driving doesn't carry a mandatory prison sentence though AFAIK.

Re: In todays news...
Back in 1988 I was asked to be an expert witness at a Coroner's Court in Hanover at the inquest regarding a fatal traffic accident where a TA soldier on his 2 week exercise had done pretty much the same as Mrs Sacoolas - pulled out onto a road and stayed on the wrong side. My brief was to give evidence on the training said TA soldier would have received before going to Germany.
As it turned out I didn't have to give evidence as basically there was no evidence to give - the TA lad would have received no specific training for driving on the right. My presence was very much to show the German court system that we took these things seriously and the verdict of the CC was rightly, that it was a tragic accident.
This was also a tragic accident and Mrs Sacoolas pleaded guilty to a lesser charge than what was originally hung on her as would be the done thing in most similar incidents. The issue that has caused the depth of feeling here was the Americans giving her diplomatic immunity and shipping her out. The subsequent efforts to keep her from standing up in court added to the frustration and seeming inability of the UK authorities to get justice done.
It's now been done, she pleaded guilty and to be honest the sentence, following the basic offence is probably a bit harsher than might be 'normal'. A friend of mine (now deceased) was charged with exactly the same offence, pleaded guilty and got a fine. He died (a few years later on a m/cycle in a traffic accident) still believing that he should have been more harshly punished.
Mrs Sacoolas didn't get off light. If some of you wanted to see her hung, drawn and quartered for what was a tragic accident, you might want to consider that it's quite easy to find yourself in the same situation. I can tell you now that any excuses you come out with will not be original.

First time i drove abroad i did leave a side street once turning into the wrong side of the road and i also manage a roundabout the wrong way. Its now 2nd nature and never think about what i am doing but easy done. Dont know what this woman's driving history in the UK was like at the time of the accident but i will believe she never set out that day to kill some poor sod.

I buy Kerrygold butter in the US, or the Costco brand from NZ which would appear to be Anchor. Both are butter colored, not that bizarre looking white crap the yanks make that looks closer to lard than butter.Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon Dec 05, 2022 9:28 am Looks like it...2021
