Anyone registered a historic vehicle?

My Kawasaki is now 40 years old, so no more MOTs or tax for it, anyone changed a vehicle to historic, I've read through the DVLA website on doing it and it seems a bit too easy.

My LC is now a historic vehicle. It was first registered in August 1980, so the rule is that you can apply for HV status on 1st April of the year following the 40th anniversary of its 1st registration. My LC has been an HV since 1st April 2021. And as you say, no more Tax or MoT...

I was surprised to read that HVs are exempt from ULEZ. Conjures up a vision of that London full of old bangers and 2Ts, cranking out pollution for all they're worth.

Still, it all adds to the value as the potential customers increase.

Mine was taxed, insured and had MoT when I applied for HV status. Not sure if all that was necessary. I'd restored it during 2020 and was desperate to ride it and HV status was 6-7 months away. So I just got it MoT'd, taxed it and put it on my multi-bike policy in early September 2020. That saw it through to HV status and now all it needs is insurance. When you do an MoT check on DVLA it puts up a big red warning, but in the small print says 'this vehicle may be MoT exempt'. Not exactly a joined up response.

Just had a read of a couple more Gov websites, once a vehicle is over 40 years old it doesn't need an MOT, you don't have to do anything for this, you just stop getting it MOT'd, so that's now then, as it was 40 years old a couple of weeks ago, and yes, I do wonder who bought a new Z1000J in the middle of November, maybe Guildford had a warm winter in 1982.

I suspect it all depends if you want to actually use it on the road prior to 1st April 2023. If so, despite the bike being MoT-exempt due to being > 40 y.o., there may be a tax requirement for an MoT. Or then again, maybe not...

The easy way would be to try and tax it and see if the system squawks about no MoT... But stop before paying, obvs...

It always makes me smile a bit that the vehicles most likely to be knackered, falling apart and generally unsafe are also the ones which don't need MOTs

That's not actually true - they have to be 40+ years old and the vast majority are cherished and well looked after. Unlike many modern vehciles which don't even get their tyre pressures checked.

Light flashes? The latest car on the drive told me that the rear nearside was low and indicated what the pressures were.

(I remember a BMW April 1st ad where they said the car told you the tyre pressures ).

Can you imagine if you had a hypochondriac car? It'd be booking itself in every 3 weeks for a diagnostic.

You don't (currently) need MOTs for bikes at all over here. In the main, it doesn't seem to cause an enormous problem with hordes of terrible old unroadworthy knackers on the road causing havoc. If anything you seem to see fewer aged bikes on the road because presumably they've expired far earlier, due to lackadaisical maintenance and are languishing in barns. My bike (c30 years old) is probably the oldest in the area, that I see on the road, by quite some margin. You maybe see a greater number of spods riding about on really rubbish mopeds - lack of lights seems the most immediately obvious issue.
