I can't see how any government could give way to even one of the strikers demands because it would open the floodgates to all the others.

Quoting the bible now a hate crime

Street preacher was charged with hate crime for quoting Bible at lesbians

‘Quoting parts of the bible not appropriate for modern society’

Wait till they get to the human sacrifice and genocide - they’ll love it. :D

That made me laugh out loud. It raises a few tricky little issues though I think.

The CROWN Prosecution Service is an instrument of the State and the head of State, the man who wears the crown is also the head of the Church of England and 'Defender of the Faith'. That faith is grounded in the Bible.

I know that KC3 has said in the past that he'd prefer the title 'Defender of Faiths' but even then, a couple of other faiths are also grounded in the Bible. Whilst he's not allowed to dabble in politics, I think he must be able to dabble in the law and how it relates to the faith that he's 'Defender' of. Maybe he'll 'ave a quiet word with the CPS.

The story also highlights the weakness of a law that conflicts with other laws.
thetimes wrote:Guidance from the Crown Prosecution Service “any crime can be prosecuted as a hate crime” if it meets specific criteria.

The bar is reached, according to an agreement between prosecutors and police, if an offence “is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice, based on a person’s disability or perceived disability; race or perceived race; or religion or perceived religion; or sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation or transgender identity or perceived transgender identity”.

Lawyers for Dunn said that the prosecution breached his human rights regarding freedom of thought, conscience, religion and expression. They said that strong opinions must be protected, “even if these cross the sensibilities of the majority of the population”.

They also said that “simply conveying Biblical truth” did not amount to abuse.
I doubt that the UK is heading towards secularity but being a multicultural society where you can be prosecuted for simply offending someone, maybe it should.

The charge should be altered to 'being an annoying and intrusive twat'. In which respect he'd be bang to rights and guilty as charged.

Just do what the Greeks do. Make public proselytising illegal.

(My old friend - now a nationalised Greek - was approached by a textbook, earnest, smartly dressed young man, shiny shoes, trousers just a tad short - in a park. Chap starts in with the 'What do you think about...' stuff in an American accent. My friend says 'On your bike or I dob you in').

If my doorstep is included in the term 'public' so much the better.

As one who was raised as a Jehovah's Witness, but managed to get out and away in his late teens/early twenties, I approve wholeheartedly of that approach. Incorporated in that legislation should also be the right for the victim to be able to give the offender a smack in the mouth... :D

That’s exactly the logic path my mind followed as well. Plus the irony of him having to swear on the bible* before giving evidence. :D

The US is giving tax breaks on eco friendly purchases and the EU decides an appropriate response is to complain about it. :wtf:
Why don't they match it?

It doesn't say so in the article but I thought the issue was they had to be purchases of goods only made in USA, Canada and Mexico. ie protectionism.

Looks like globalism has had its day.

(They originally left out Mexico, then realised where all their stuff is made  ).
