Blimey

Post by Yorick »

Blimey. FF to 55 seconds.

In the 80s when we raced, that bank was pushed back and replaced with Armco barrier. Much safer??

Where's it from, I thought it might be Mallory but I don't think it is.

You missed my first post. After this they put in Armcos.
Early 80s we all came through there flat stick with elbows scuffing the steel.
Mid 80s they put in the chicane.

I spectated at Devil's Elbow for the Races of the Year when John Cooper beat Ago and when Jarno Saarinen made the rest of the field (including a certain SMB Hailwood) look stupid on his 350 Yam. At that point (early 70s) there was Armco on the exit, as I vividly recall Jarno tankslapping out of DE with the throttle pinned, and every lap the slapping continued further and further down the Armco. He was absolutely taking the piss.

Obviously something else besides Armco had to be done, especially with power outputs going skywards, so the chicane was put in. Inevitable, but it did spoil the spectacle somewhat.

But the bikes got faster. Exiting in 2000s on my GSXR1000s was a bit hairy, but nothing like my first race in 1982. Scary. But I was 22 and invincible.

Oh, jealous of you seeing the big boys.

Yeah, by the time I got to do track days at Mallory (I was a late starter) the chicane was in place on DE and its fangs had pretty much been drawn. But I imagine it could still have been pretty hairy in the wet, or on a very high-powered bike.

I simply couldn't believe how insanely quick Jarno was - he made a very high class field look slow. Hailwood was riding again for the first time in 3 or 4 years and finished a creditable 4th on a 350 Yam, but Jarno just destroyed the field. This was in September 1972. 8 months later he was dead - an absolutely tragic loss.

The 1971 RotY was an absolute hoot. There was no way that John Cooper was going to let Ago win on his manor. He just harried and hassled him, passing him into the hairpin on just about every lap (or so I remember it), and you could tell by the cheers when he'd put a move on Ago. It was a famous win, and to me it didn't matter that JC had 250cc advantage over ago (750 vs. 500), as Ago's MV was trick as fuck. It would be like a WSBK bike/rider beating Rossi or Marquez on a MotoGP bike.
