Think the proper word is “Pigeon “Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 8:26 pm I've known the rhyme since I was a child, but it was just "Tiger" instead.

I'm from Bradford where there was racism, but I only ever heard it as baby by the toe.mel wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 9:21 pmThink the proper word is “Pigeon “Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 8:26 pm I've known the rhyme since I was a child, but it was just "Tiger" instead.

Re: Palace racism row
But it wasn't once, it's reported as:
The late Queen's lady-in-waiting Lady Susan Hussey has apologised and resigned after she repeatedly asked a black British charity boss where she was "really" from.
Hence the suggestion of possible dementia.

I know what that dog was named when it was alive 80 or so years ago.Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 10:56 pm I wonder what the correct answer today is to the question "What was Guy Gibson*'s dog is called?

I wonder whether you would consider that a good name now for a dog?

Re: Palace racism row
In the US it would have been interpreted as "where are your family originally from" & not seen as racist at all. Looks to me like someone was either playing the professional victim or is a bit thick.

Re: Palace racism row
I got the same from some twat in a bar several years ago who was shitfaced drunk before noon... Then the fucker accused me of having a fake British accent. He was very proud of being Irish, despite not being able to name a single town or city in Ireland. It went back & forth a bit until he moved my pint, I grabbed him by the throat & gave him a percussive adjustment that left him laying on the floor.
Bar owner came out from the kitchen after he heard the twat mouthing off. Picked him up & gave him the bum's rush out the door. Funniest thing was his parting comment of "I'm telling my dad!"
Next time I saw him in the bar he came over & apologized. Probably a bit shocked that some old fart put him on his arse in front of about 20 other customers.

A man who said "I'm just trying to find my dog", and sniggered.

Re: Palace racism row
I believe it is short for Negro. That, and Caucasian, Asiatic, etc are AFAIK still valid broad brush descriptors of human characteristics. I would not be offended at being described as Caucasian.Horse wrote: ↑Fri Dec 02, 2022 3:38 amI know what that dog was named when it was alive 80 or so years ago.Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 10:56 pm I wonder what the correct answer today is to the question "What was Guy Gibson*'s dog is called?

Re: Palace racism row
It seems the black lady gave herself a made up African name taking parts from different groups, if the octogenarian was familiar with African names this could have be the cause of great confusion.
If I met someone called Adolf Goldstein and dressed as a Cossack then I'd wonder how all that goes together.

Re: Palace racism row
I don't think that Caucasian have been used in a systematic dehumanising way so it's not directly comparable.
This is one of those stories that pleases everyone. Those who want to feel offended can do so, likewise those who want to feel put out. Meanwhile us right thinking people just glance at it and move on.

Re: Palace racism row
When I was working in rescue in the UK we took in a Staffie called n**** which had been owned by Eastern Europeans (no idea which country). Obviously, shock, horror, how could anyone name a dog n****? Roll on a few years and I'm talking to a Bulgarian friend who used the term to describe black people. She always insisted that I should correct any bad use of her English as she was keen to improve, so obviously I told her that was not acceptable language, but she explained that in Bulgarian it is just another way of saying negro and no offence is meant (she is very much anti-racist). I did a Google translate and sure enough, both words have the same Bulgarian translation.
I guess they've been pretty much insulated from the Western guilt over slavery. And yes, she does use the term 'negro' now when speaking in English.
