I don't think the uk does afford all its citizens equal rights. Not in mine and friends experiences. But, ok!

I’d agree that the level of advantage granted to people can vary wildly, and than can also be subject to personal experience. A person’s rights however are a different thing, and people in the UK most definitely do have equal rights.

I think most British fail to realise that we do have relatively well balanced, multi cultural society - and people do have equal rights. Whether they behave to deserve them is another matter.
Noggin mention France - which is riddled with horrible , aggressive racism - from the outskirts of Paris all they way down to the South of France.
Having done my 8 years in Switzerland - the most comfortable country in Europe. Absolutely rife with sexism, racism and a complete hate of any Yugoslavians and Italians. As an Auslander, you certainly did not have anything like the rights of the locals, which they were happy to remind you. But as the Potmeister says - their country, their rules.
But the do still refer to Black Africa and White Africa - and I was in meetings where the inhabitants were openly referred to as n*****s.

Germany - it is a lot better than it was - but is rare to see a woman in a senior job. Racism definitely is boiling under the surface - but unless you happen to be in Rostock, I would guess that the system in generally even handled ( and very German).

Western "democracy" is a little bit of an indulgence - and a big fat lie. Just look at the States at the moment.. In most of the rest of the world, regions have survived for many centuries with male dominated autocracies - sometimes for the better / sometimes for the worse. We are fortunate - we don't live there. But if we go there, perhaps we just need to not test our absolute belief in 'human rights". And obviously, we can chose not to go there.
Whilst we are afforded the right to live as gay, straight, jew, muslim, christian, atheist, black, white, abled , disabled, them /they, traveller, crusty - that does not mean that right is absolute and transferable to where ever you go. You can walk down Brighton main drag smoking a spliff and nobody will say anything. Carry a small amount into Dubai - and you are going to jail.

Might have to eat my words here. I saw the guys whose video about meeting the uber-rich Shiek and going back to his place talking about being in Qatar and he had nothing but praise for the place and the locals. He said all prejudices have been squashed as everyone has been really friendly and accommodating etc blah. So not the culture clash I/most had been expecting? Not dismissing their politics, human rights etc, obvs.
