I have just attempted to buy something for £10. I have tried FOUR times, and I haven't had a single text yet with my 6 digit code! Life is too fucking short, why can't they issue a special card to people like me who don't lose their cards, and if I had one stolen I would advise them PDQ.

:angry-cussingblack: :angry-cussingblack: :angry-cussingblack:

I had an 18 month long issue with Santanfuckingder over their One-Time Passcodes (OTP) that they decided was going to be needed for internet shopping. The simple issue was that I never ever got one. Now and again I could make a purchase and it would just go through but if a OTP was required I was fucked.

They kept on insisting that the code had been sent (automatically) so the issue was at my end. Had Turk Telekom blocked any SMS numbers? No

Was there a problem with my phone itself not receiving SMS messages? No.

The problem was that their (Santanfuckingder's) system did not allow calls or SMS messages to +90 international code numbers. There may have been a lot of other countries that weren't served by their system, I don''t know but it stands to reason I wasn't alone.

I started getting the OTPs sent to a UK phone that my son had but getting the number changed was a battle within a battle. I would call him on Skype, while I was organising an on-line purchase, he'd get the OTP and I'd complete the transaction. I now have the phone here but I also have other options for on-line shopping. Very few departments in Santanfuckingder are allowed to call Turkey. Even the guy from Executive Communications had to get permission to call me to sort out the account closure issue I had earlier this year. The 'security' people can call to confirm I made a purchase or whatever but I doubt there's many more.

Access to my NS&I account needs a text for two factor authentication. I've got rid of my UK phone number and tried to change to my Spanish number on Friday. It took three phone calls before I got someone clever enough to do it.
Damn. I need to do that and not sure I have the patience!!

These fucking train strikes....

So far I've had to scrub the Greminette's 18th, a night out up Borough with friends, tomorrow's lunch at Ivy Asia and now, potentially, a big gathering of friends on the 17 Dec.

Get back to work you grasping feckers. Ain't nobody needing a 10% pay rise.

I work in the industry but as a contractor, boils my piss too. Country is on it's knees and everyone is getting on the pay rise bandwagon!

Trade unionists, they're brilliant at ruining their own industry, then later on looking for someone else to blame for it.

Not to practically get from where I live to the west end, no. Bear in mind from my local train station, operated by South Eastern, a fast train to Charing Cross is c. 17mins. Lovely, but let's look at the alternative solutions in their absence.

We looked at getting the eight people to Abbey Wood to get on the Elizabeth line via a minicab, but they were quoting c.£100 to get there, as they know there's a rail strike, per car (no 8 seaters available, so 2 cars needed). As my annoying American friend would say, 'Do the math'.

Ditto Buses, most direct is three buses taking at least 2 hours there. Getting back it trickier, maybe a night bus back, but they're every hour and each journey is filled with south London's finest loons. Best avoided.

No tube lines this far SE, wrong type of soil, guv.

Kinda fucked really.

Your card being stolen isn't the issue. It's when the card details are plucked out of the ether or released in one the many data leaks that happen.

Card use without MFA is too risky nowadays. In fact any sensitive logon that doesn't use MFA these days is a no no.

Unfortunately.

Firstly, banks weren't given an option on this. The regulators decided more protection from fraud was required and banks were given the order to implement it and told to pick up the cost of development and implementing the change. And yet most people still have a 'free' bank account.

Secondly, if somebody had managed to fraudulently use your card, you'd probably be even more angry, notwithstanding that your bank, unless you were spectacularly negligent, would have to pick up the bill for it.

So remind me again, what exactly are you angry with your card provider for?

Amex can manage to both e-mail me AND use SMS. E-mail is usually reliable, SMS is often not. Why can't Visa& Mastercard do the same.

They can and will reap the rewards. I have rarely used Amex over the last couple of years, I used it twice yesterday when I would previously have used Visa or Mastercard

But is that how it works?

Imagine £2000 income
Paying £1000 fixed mortgage.
Paying £1000 living expenses.

10% inflation only affects living expenses.

So you're only 5% worse off.

Not perfect but you get the idea.

In an individual basis, yes. Add to that somebody might get free food or transport. They would be less affected by inflation. But somebody with a mortgage or other debt, four kids to feed, fuel to pay for, etc. would be impacted more, so aggregation is needed to determine the rate of inflation at a national level. Hence we have economists who get excited by food index basis points movement and the price of semi conductors.

If Man in Street gets higher pay rises, he carries on spending despite higher prices, fueling demand, pushing prices up further. If Man in Street gets zero percent pay rise with in prices going up, he'll rein in his spending, meaning supply strips demand and deflation occurs, making prices of good drop. But we don't want to to drop to the point of negative growth as this stifles industry as people stop spending if things are going down in price as they may get it cheaper in three months time.

This all very Peter and Jane, but it illustrates why governments and central banks advocate restraint in pay rises. Of course, everybody agrees, apart from where they personally are concerned, and thus exposes what fucking great hypocrites we all are. :P

One point to add to this is that whilst Base rate, and thus mortgages have been higher in the past, (think back to when rates weren't scrapping along the bottom due to the credit crunch) the level of debt per capita in this country is worryingly high (mortgages in particular given house prices have necessitated bigger LTV, but also credit cards and vehicles on PLP finance). Higher rates will therefore be felt more acutely.

One positive is that employment remains high, unlike the last recession which was fueled by a lack of jobs.

Of course, but we'd booked to go to a specific place: https://www.wearefairgame.com/

And then dinner in a nearby Italian restaurant that I know.

Nice to do something different with friends.

Of course now we'll probably have to cancel the evening which means neither venue will see the colour of our money which does the struggling economy no good whatsoever.

In my limited experience, the bank DO NOT pick up the bill, they simply refuse to pay the retailer !
