I raced from 82 - 89 and never saw them used in the smaller classes.
It would have been AM26 for 250/350 LCs.

Back in 't day when I were lad, when I had a Mk2 Golf, I got all four tyres replaced once as they were all bald, Avon ZV3, they were brilliant. Never had an Avon on the bike, still using Bridgestone on the bike.

Ah yes. I remember running a TF11 on the front of my 350LC with a Pirelli somethingorother on the back. On the road...

I always had Avons on my LC's, I don't know anyone that had anything else, they were the go-to tyre for us hooligans.
I've still got a pair of LC wheels with Avons on that I used at Pembrey about a decade ago, they're scrubbed up like any other race tyre and I wore my right hand peg down, so I had no issues with them.

I don't know if the brand has actually ceased to trade or whether it's just the UK facility that's closing, it didn't say.

AFAIK, just the factory... for the moment anyway. Once that's gone, it's hard to see where Avon fit in the bigger picture any more.

They still make tyres for loads of other stuff, they're one of the 'go tos' for things like Caterhams, not-F1 single seaters, amateur rally and stuff like that? I dunno if that's just a branding thing or what though.

I'm sure that in one report they listed Brexit as being a major reason for the closure.
Not joking, it'll likely be on't net somewhere.

I think they make all the tyres for historic F1.

Brexit and the pandemic have been a godsend for CEOs when explaining failing businesses to the board - "It wasn't me, it's because of...".

Yeah of course, but it's been a big get out of jail card for some, step into the board and explain that you've made some bad business decisions, or blame it on a big looming shadow. If Carillion had crashed yesterday it would be blamed on Brexit and the pandemic and they'd all have walked away scot free

I have only ever had 1 Avon tyre on all my bikes and it was an Avon Venom iirc bought on the Isle of Man as it was the only tyre in the shop that would fit my 636 after a puncture coming into Ramsey off the mountain section. The shop was about to shut so Abel rode ahead to keep them open while i limped into town about 10 mph on a flat tyre. Went back out and scrubbed it with a couple of passes over the mountain in the dark as weather was forecast torrential rain for next few days and we had a couple of days in Wales still to do.

I dont recall any issues with grip and it lasted about 4000 miles before i changed it out for whatever i was using normally at the time. Animal from VD days used to always use Avon tyres on his bikes and for those that know him he doesnt hang around and pushed tyres hard
