Paying up front
Got some friends (yeah, really) who seem insistent on paying up front for stuff.
They bought a brand new car, supposed to be delivered a month ago, apparently it was delivered to the local dealership who seem to have misplaced it!
Anyway, they eventually get it last week, and it has 200+ km on it.
They are having a walk in wardrobe built at their gaffe, again paid the chippie in full, he was supposed to start last week, as yet, not seen hide nor hair of him!
Wifey did some work for them, they wanted to pay her after half the work was done.
Personally, I've found workmen are far more incentivised if they dont have the money in their hands.
What say you. I know it's their money, but i don't like to see folks getting ripped off.

Re: Paying up front
The 200km probably wouldn't bother me too much. But no, not paying anyone 100% up front for anything involving labour. Materials paid possibly, stage payments, fine, but nobody gets the lot until the job's done and accepted.

Re: Paying up front
we've had loads of work done here over the years including an extension that took 6 months, for that we paid the builders a weekly salary depending on the amount of hours worked e.g. if they worked half a day then they didn't get paid for it. The builder is a neighbour & friend so we knew he's not going to muck us about.
the current project is a fixed price with stage payments, the initial groundworks have been completed so we've paid for that as soon as the invoice came in, materials all go on my account at the builders merchant. We don't pay anything up front

Re: Paying up front
We'll agree on a price, but the total definitely won't be paid in full until I'm happy the work is done. That's how I'd expect it to be.

I'm a tradesman and thats just stupid.
Maybe pay for materials in advance but not labour.

Similar for our extension. Price agreed up front (albeit some additions along the way).Taff wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 6:04 pm an extension that took 6 months, for that we paid the builders a weekly salary depending on the amount of hours worked e.g. if they worked half a day then they didn't get paid for it.

Invoiced and paid in stages, eg foundations, walls, roof, typically monthly.

Re: Paying up front
Misplacing a car, useless fucks! If I purchased a brand new vehicle I certainly wouldn’t be happy with 200+ mileage on it, that’s a big no no. Delivery miles and that’s it.
As for the other work never pay in full until the work is done or like above pay weekly wage etc depending on what’s being done.

We've had lots of work done here.
Always paid the invoices for materials same day, but labour at the end.

Re: Paying up front
I've bought lots of new bikes in UK
Maybe small deposit but only pay when I see the bikes.
Apart from the 2 bikes I just bought. Had to pay in full as they were specially ordered from the mainland.
