In conversations when faced with uncomfortable truths you try to invalidate what the other party is saying by implying they may be racist.Potter wrote: ↑Thu Nov 24, 2022 10:18 amI know, it's a ridiculous proposition - I'm trying to make him see how ridiculous his proposition is that the Qataris are rapists because they have browner skin than him.
When he was married prior to 1992 there was no law against raping your wife, just like in Qatar now - but that doesn't mean everyone was/is doing it.

What did he say?
I started reading the whole thread after the accusations of people posting racist comments. It all seems to be a bit like a 'criticise Israel, you're an antisemite' and 'what about the Victorians?' argument but, of course, if anyone has anything specific to object to - flag it.

He hasn't actually proposed that thought, has he? You're the only person bringing skin colour into the conversation.Potter wrote: ↑Thu Nov 24, 2022 10:18 amI know, it's a ridiculous proposition - I'm trying to make him see how ridiculous his proposition is that the Qataris are rapists because they have browner skin than him.

Maybe some of them are doing it Ricky-Gervaise-ironically, to smoke out the real rassists.
I think sooner or later you need to say what you really think or you're just exacerbating the problem. Unless you're rolling about with laughter at how brilliant it is.

Just edited the speelchucker version of my post within a short time of posting...no special powers required. Didn't even have to put my underpants on outside my tights or wear a cape.
Edit: I may be blaming spellchecker in error. Just typed Victorians again and it didn't flinch. Must have been me implementing the grocer's apostrophe.

I'd just like to make the (blindingly obvious) point that there are total shits and lovely people (and all points in between) in all nationalities.

Re: Qatar World Cup
Thank you for empowering me as a spokesperson, but I was only speaking for myself when I called Qataris backward fucks and its my opinion rather than some sort of qualification. Also, I said they were 300 years behind us ,not 500, but I'll bow to your knowledge! Sorry, couldn't resist that one!Potter wrote: ↑Fri Nov 25, 2022 4:30 am I think it's a tragic shame that whole sections of the world get written off as "backwards fucks" when they're just people like us.
Reflect on it - you surely must know that most of the world outside of Great Britain think that British people are arseholes? Even other white Europeans think that, I grew up in France for a bit and I got a lot of grief for being British. I work with a lot of other nationalities and the British do not have a good reputation. Some of it valid but most of what is said about British people isn't true and I do the same job trying to defend British people sometimes, because we're not all arseholes or backwards fucks either.
Although some of you make it very hard work, because aside from being fundamentally decent people, some of you can also be Brexiting, racist, colonialist, hypocritical, arrogant, shite-spouting, stereotypical British that think they're gods chosen ones.
You say your daughters are subjected and exposed to misogyny when in the UK, yet they aren't concerned about the misogyny of UAE male guardianship laws? Or that rape victims can and are jailed for extramarital sex? That is surely worse than a shout of "you don't get many of the to the pound love"? The "Ruler" of Dubai's Daughters somewhat bizarre escape from Dubai? There's endless mysoginist thing to quote really.
But let's leave our anecdotal and heard about on internet stuff behind and look at more fact based accusations of human rights abuse, migrant workers rights, female rights travesties from the likes of say HRW (Human Rights Watch), ILO (International Labour Organisation) and I'd go on to include Amnesty International, but they were banned from entering Dubai after publishing a criticising report on Dubai in 2014 IIRC? Too many sources to choose from really. I never really get why you defend the indefensible? I can only assume you have an internal moral quandary about doing well for yourself in a place with such questionable human rights records?
FWIW, I don't entirely disagree with some of your deflections about the UKs crime, I probably even agree with you in many cases. But,unlike places like Qatari and the UAE, I see the UK as a progressive country and a great place to be if you're from any sort of minority. Like most, I'm very proud of the support the UK provides for people of all sexual orientations, for people with mental health issues, physical disabilities and our general attitude to diversity. I just don't see that over there. When i do I'll be sure to call them up-to-date fucks.

Re: Qatar World Cup
I think you're oblivious! Or just in an area that you don't see that sort of person. The French as a nation are pretty racist. I have met quite a few that are spectacularly anti British - random in an area that gets sooo much money from British tourists!!
They are also massively chauvinist, but apparently not as bad as the Italians (so I'm told!)

Re: Qatar World Cup
But any worserer than most of other places?
I live in the sticks, massively insular. Most of my neighbours haven't been out the country and have no plans to do so. They treat me as a curiosity if anything, as I'm forrin, a clear foot taller, and hairy. I mean yeah I get that the French are really rude as a nation but I don't feel singled out.

Re: Qatar World Cup
I suppose I don't really know. I deal with awful chauvinism in the uk most of my late teens/adult life so I don't really see it as that bad here - it's only going over what I dealt with when I was young and now I am much better able to deal with itDefTrap wrote: ↑Fri Nov 25, 2022 11:08 pmBut any worserer than most of other places?

I've seen serious racism from Brits when I lived in Bristol - to the point that I was embarrassed I'd ever classed them as friends and don't really want to live anywhere near that area again.
Out here - yes, I've been singled out and disadvantaged for being nonFrench, probably more so for being English. But by a minority. And TBF, they have reason to dislike british seasonaires and incomers - imagine English filled Spanish holiday resorts and live with that up in the mountains for 5 months of the year. The (younger) British seasonaires rarely spent money in French pubs and bars - the ones they did were Anglicised to appeal to that demographic; virtually none made any effort to speak french. And the behaviour was pretty shocking. Not saying French seasonaires don't behave badly but it doesn't seem to be quite so IN YOUR FACE!!
So, I don't know exactly. Now I speak french I have experienced fewer issues and lets be honest, I've hardly been anywhere for a long time so things may have changed!!
But, anecdotal comments from friends do suggest that there is an element of 'white' racism. My non white friends do tell me that yes, there is a racism issue over here.
EDIT - good chance some of peoples attitude to me is that pink hair is PROPER weird over here!!
