Would we expect Qataris to park their beliefs and customs at Dover or Heathrow if invited here for a world event? Tell their wimmen to take their Burquas off? No of course we wouldn't. No one should host a worldwide event if you can't accommodate your invited guests and their beliefs. But that was never going to happen. They are a bunch of backward fucks that are about 300 years behind the west, but Fifa knew that and still went ahead despite the obvious offence to the worldwide LGBTQ communities. Clusterfuck.
No, but they wouldn't be allowed to enact those beliefs and customs if they went against UK law. For example

AFAIK, no one is being asked to park their beliefs and customs, but they are expected not to enact them. Freedom of expression is very limited in Qatar, especially to non-citizens, and I should imagine that most Qataris feel that the country has already given plenty of leeway to visiting foreigners.

I ask because there seems to be a belief that if it’s not strictly illegal then people must be doing it. Perhaps it’s not as common in Qatar as it was in the UK so there is no rush to change the law.
Why would a wife report being raped by her husband when it is lawful for him to do so?

According to surveys a non-trivial number of UK folk still don't think non-consensual sex with your long term partner is rape.

Is the UK as 'backwards' as Qatar? No, I don't think so...I just also think that maybe people should reconsider just how well....recent...a lot of changes were in the UK before getting all finger pointy. People chuck around phrases like "middle ages" to describe things which people in the UK were still doing within the living memory of people on this forum.

And presumably before it became law it was a bigger non-trivial number. Because at the very least laws are thought provoking. Motorcycle helmets didn't used to be a thing - I would suggest that riders who have never known anything else wouldn't even consider going out without one, law or not.

I don't think this line of devil's advocacy "stop assuming all forriners are rapists - you self-centered honky!" is really going anywhere.

And the counter argument is going somewhere?

I don't think anyone will win any prizes for pointing out spousal abuse is bad, mmmmmkay? Nor do I think they're gonna cancel the world cup based on what some British bloke that doesn't even like football thinks.

As said above, it is about the whole range of Qatari state supported abuse of females.

Not unique to Qatar of course, but it has the spotlight because it is hosting the WCup.

We are in the West they are in the East - it's different, it's not like it's being hosted on the Isle of Man or something, it's fucking 1000's of miles way, they have different cultures that should be respected.

But at the same time they have the religous side of things that tarnishes my respect for Qatar as a country. It's sad that the power over there is held through religion but the majority that probably just want to pray and live a more western way life are the ones that get all the shit and are hated by the west.

Shit rolls down hill!

An overview of Qatari investment in the UK. For those not feeling the love, don't shop at Sainsbury, bank at Barclay or take a British Airways flight from Heathrow.

I can't answer, I have no experience of this, I was still at college in 1992, your generation were so rapey that you needed new laws to tackle it, I can't get my head around it, perhaps I'm naive, explain it to us younger folk.
[Fixed the above for you].

You unsurprisingly wish to avoid discussing 2022 Qatar because by doing so that would then lead to discussing the tribal autocracy in Dubai UAE where you have previously said that you made of your money.

Easy dirty sand money. Says anything to justify his own narrative. To himself. Lashes out at others to deflect. :(

Indeed.

I am confused why you're retiring to a country you seem to dislike in every way.

I don’t dislike it in every way.

I’m mainly pushing back on the little Englanders who think that their white colonial narrative is still valid.
You seem to though, from taxes to Policing, to safety and to corruption, politics, to weather... It's all a bit confusing to me.

Based upon what you say in threads, you seem to love the lifestyle over there... based upon what you say... heck, i'd come live there with you :D

If you mean the white colonial prejudice that resulted in the UK shutting its borders and sending them all home, then obviously yes. This is hardly news.

I typed racist in my response to you but Apple corrective text changed it to rapist, they’re clever these predictive text things, the AI has realised that you’re a boomer.
So in response to my post about marital rape your reply was actually meant to be about racism wtf!?

Do you really expect anyone to believe that? You need to get a grip.

No, I was saying that you come from a generation of systemic racists and rapists, but it changed both to rapists.
There is very obviously lots of proof for the former, but in fairness you did need new laws on rape to curtail you, so perhaps the AI was making a point.
LOL you are aware just because he's older than you it doesn't necessarily make him either a racist or a rapist though yeah ?

I know, it's a ridiculous proposition - I'm trying to make him see how ridiculous his proposition is that the Qataris are rapists because they have browner skin than him.

When he was married prior to 1992 there was no law against raping your wife, just like in Qatar now - but that doesn't mean everyone was/is doing it.
The point you think you're trying to make and the actual point you're making is somewhat different

You've progressed from someone having a semi-intelligent conversation, to a kid running round with his own shit all over his hands wiping it on other kids saying "see, i've wiped my shit on you"

I know you think you're being the voice of reason.... but i'm not convinced it's actually the case.
