Daydreaming thread. How much does a suspension upgrade cost?

Post by Taipan »

Not talking full ohlins or anything, more at the cheaper end of things. Say a k-tech Razor shock and fork springs to suit my bulk, how much am I looking at for a suspension place to fit all that?

I only pootle into London and back and don't do track days or owt, is it really still worth my having this done?

Forks on my XSR900 was £130 at 100% Suspension. That was me removing and fitting though, it's 15-20 mins work. If you can remove the wheel, the fork is only 6 more bolts.

The shock is arguably harder to swap, assuming they've not changed much in design, but that's only because you need a proper stubby spanner 17mm i think, to get access to one of the lower mount bolts. Other than that, it's just fiddly. A shock you can find the price easily, K-tech, Nitron, all the same really.

They will improve things, mostly in the way the XSR felt a bit 'crashy' through bumps, holes etc, it felt better afterwards, night and day, mmmmm i'm not sure night and day... but certainly better.

You could take the bike to Colin at 100% Suspension and he'd do it all while you waited.

Nice ride up to Stowmarket and Darren@MCT will sort it - re-spring and service will suffice I'm sure......

This is what I'm planning for the GSXS once the loan is done. I'm figuring I might need a new shock which will be the big cost and then just springs/service at the front.

I could really do with a replacement shock on my ST1050 as at 34000 miles I'm sure it's well cooked!
Darren was always my go-to guy and when the day does come the ST will go there too.

I've never used him but he always gets good reviews in mags and from people who've been there so given it's not far it's where I've decided to go.

I've taken 5 track or road bikes of various specs, from stock to Ohlins / WP equipped, to him and so have numerous friends - service is top notch. I've even called him from Spain for advice on track settings. He's a proper decent bloke..,..

Not unless there's something wrong with yours that servicing won't resolve.

If you haven't already I'd bite the seller's arm off. For the money, that's pretty much as good as you will get.

I love good suspenders on a bike. I'll try to get what I want with the stock items, but the middle ground always seems to be missing. On My 10R the rear shock was rubbish, but the forks didn't take much to be right. On the current Zed,it came with an Ohlins, which is ok,even though it's at the cheap end of the line, but I couldn't get the forks right at all,so money was spent there.

Potter has it pretty nailed,if you budget 2k for both ends, you'll not be far off.

Mined ewe,if you chop your bike in every couple of months,I wouldn't bother. Some folk baulk at the though of spending money on suspension, yet have no issue with spunking bigger amounts on snorty cans and bolt on gee-gaws,whatever blows your skirt up. I don't mind the cost, because I usually keep mine long term.

I take it we're talking about the cp3 platform.
Front end. I have andreani on mine, works fine compared to std. Big bumps are a bit harsh. Having a compression adj is the thing. My research said Nitron, my bank balance said otherwise.
Rear end. If the shock is in good condition (low miles), then you just need a matched spring as the oe unit has a good damping curve. Initially I fitted a new spring, and that made a huge difference, but then I was offered a mt09sp rear unit for silly money, so just had to.
If you replace an emulsion shock with another emulsion shock, you will get similar results. If you fit a fully adjustable, all singing all dancing unit, you can still set it up wrong and screw the handling up.

I can't see that happening as I love the bike, but if riding it daily causes my knee problems, then it might not be my decision anyway.
I don't think i'd drop £2k into it, as it is only a commuter after all. But I have resprung bikes for my weight before and its been much better for it. I can get a k-tech shock for about £450 new and I suppose a £100 for springs? Then whatever someone charges to fit it and set the sag for my weight etc. I think I might risk that?

Just seen this on ebay but not sure if that spring suits y 10 stone or not! :?

It is very tempting, but I'm still licking the wounds of the X-ADV loss and don't fancy risking £450 to someone I don't know?

Send the seller a PM asking him what weight it's sprung for - can't hurt...?

Yeah, I'd forgotten about that. Tricky one. I guess this is FB marketplace, not ebay?

That's a 10.18kg/mm spring, bit stiff for a 10st botty

If you look at the second photo, there is a code stencilled on the spring. If you contact K-Tech they can tell you what the code means in terms of spring rate and whether it will suit your weight or not...
