New tablet
I am looking to get a new tablet to replace the iPad Pro 12.9 that my wife decided to destroy by picking it up by its cover - smashing the screen into a million pieces (replacement screen 300 plus - so I bought a MacBook instead)
The main use is for travel - you cannot download Netflix movies onto a MacBook or a PC. Having got somer long haul planned, i would like it for movies etc.
Is there any reason to go for anything other that the 2021 iPad basic?

Re: New tablet
Sounds like you're an Apple customer, so recommending Android tablets isn't very useful?Mr Moofo wrote: ↑Wed Nov 16, 2022 2:24 pm I am looking to get a new tablet to replace the iPad Pro 12.9 that my wife decided to destroy by picking it up by its cover - smashing the screen into a million pieces (replacement screen 300 plus - so I bought a MacBook instead)

I'm actually looking around at the moment myself - I accidentally dunked my Sony Xperia4 the other night without realising the screen was cracked (it's currently sitting on a radiator in a probably vain attempt to dry it out).
What's your price point?

Re: New tablet
Am am prepare to be swayed away from Apple. I was severely pissed off when my less tha 2 years iPad , bought from Apple as a replacement for one that had broken, gave up being usable after 2 years.
Price point - and iPad is 300 ( a pro is 600 2nd hand - and I did think I needed one).
Not overly worried about camera ability - but streaming, watching, email, surfing are key.

Re: New tablet
I've been using a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE for well over a year, I bought it when the battery died on my Dell laptop. The tab has a 12.4 screen and the optional keyboard case. I've found it perfect for most things, the only time I plug the laptop in is for some mapping software I use to create GPX routes for my Garmin, I can do it on the tablet but it's easier on the laptop. If this one broke I'd buy another, I like it.
The Dex mode makes it look like a laptop, multiple windows that can be moved around the screen.
Be aware that not all apps are optimised for the landscape view of a tablet, they're designed to work on a phone in portrait mode. The Facebook app is a good example of a well used app. The work around is to use Facebook in a browser but it's not ideal, even switching to desktop mode doesn't do much to help.
Just had a look at the price on Curry's, it's £559 for the tablet and £139 for the keyboard.

Re: New tablet
I bought one in March this year. V pleased with it. I like the pen but need to spend a bit more time working it to get the most out of it...it's good for doing screen capture then drawing on the image. Bit pricey given the budget stated but there are cheaper Samsung tablets that aren't quite so high spec that should be fine for the requirements.Pirahna wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 9:02 am I've been using a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE for well over a year, I bought it when the battery died on my Dell laptop. Re: New tablet
Thanks Pirahana - but at that price point I would probably go iPad Pro. Apples battery and memory limitations do bug me.
@Count Steer - are any of the other galaxy tablets good?

Re: New tablet
IIRC I was torn between the S7 FE and a couple of cheaper Samsung options that reviewed very well. In the end I went upmarket a bit because I'm hoping it will eventually completely replace my quite high spec (but getting a bit old and tired) laptop.
I'll have a rummage and find the original comparison article I used.
Back soon.

Galaxy Tab S6 Lite - was £299. Gets for Web surfing, film watching - it's 10.4" and has a stylus and USB Type C port. I'll PM you some info.

Re: New tablet
Not really a compelling reason to go with an iPad Pro unless you're doing serious work on it (video editing, artworking, music production etc). They're ludicrously powerful these days.
Now that the basic design has trickled down you may as well just get a basic one for basic tasks, unless you really want the best of all the gadgetry.

Personally I'm eyeing up the 'rugged' tablets - simply because I'm a clutz, and I like to use it for watching video in the tub.Slenver wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 12:58 pm Not really a compelling reason to go with an iPad Pro unless you're doing serious work on it (video editing, artworking, music production etc). Re: New tablet
I've currently got a Ulefone Armor8Pro, it's solid as anything. I've dropped it a few times with no probs. It's fallen into the tub at least twice.Mr Moofo wrote: ↑Tue Nov 22, 2022 8:09 amHaving broken my phone screen 4 times , I might be with you !Rockburner wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 3:44 pmPersonally I'm eyeing up the 'rugged' tablets - simply because I'm a clutz, and I like to use it for watching video in the tub.Slenver wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 12:58 pm Not really a compelling reason to go with an iPad Pro unless you're doing serious work on it (video editing, artworking, music production etc). Could of small foibles, but nothing that would stop me buying one again.
