Qatar World Cup

Post by Demannu »

Yes or no?
A competition awarded by bribery in a country that purely wanted a vanity project.
Dont share the values of the majority of the teams taking part and have virtually used slave labour to build the stadiums.
Not a fan myself

Seems like the perfect place for a game rooted in money, greed and corruption.

Interesting watching the football glitterati tying themselves up in knots, attempting to justify suckling at the tit of it all whilst professing their love of LGBT+ and human rights.

Just a thought - if this is going to be about the politics - can the thread be named appropriately and moved to the politics section? You can talk about human rights, your love of LGBT+ issues, BLM/ALM/WLM (and rugby is better, the roads being clear, the bumming hat) etc etc etc to your hearts content

Then any of us who want to risk a virtual flame-torching by actually watching the effing WC can have another 'Qatar World Cup' thread in the Sports subforum (is there a Sports subforum?) where we can actually talk about the football? (i.e. how much of a spoilt twat we think Ronaldo is, naturally ;) )

I find it somewhat amusing that our knee-taking moral guardians seem to have made a Faustian pact over Qatar!

I'm a no.... partly due to location, corruption, but partly because WTF are they thinking in a busy time and not thinking about the actual team/players etc.

It's a complete fuck show.

Ill watch what games i can. Sod the politics and ethical stance and keep it out the game. Highlight will also be watching Harry Kane greetin whenever a decision goes against him or the team. Always amusing.

It is all very well for Blaetter to state that it was the wrong decision - everybody new that at the time. But corruption and greed were the order of the day - but that is always very FIFA (we used to use the same hotel as FIFA in Zurich - I have never seen so many people going in and out with boxes - and being exchanging during dinner. Very weird). Bottom line is Qatar has no interest in Football, and it has shocking human rights record - add to that it is sand riddled sweat box - players and spectators could well die.

What is more impressive is the duplicity of the players, managers and the football press. Garry Neville seems to be doing fine line in hypocrisy. Expect loads of virtue signalling - but no real protests.

I wonder how Budweiser, the official beer of the World Cup, is going to fair!
And the end of the day, I don't care - Brazil will win. France will come second.

Wasn't it originally going to be in summer like it always is, then they realised that's a dumb idea?

Or am I imagining that?

Not convinced that's what was happening, but thanks for dragging the thread firmly into the gutter

My local butcher (Liverpool fan) was absolutely fuming about the timing and the state some of the players might come back in at mid-season. (I was reassuring him that Liverpool would pick up and he went a bit off on one about the WC and, as he had a knife in his hand, I'm glad he was on the other side of the counter. I think he's a no. :D )

Personally I don't see direct equivalence. Just because you don't like racists doesn't mean you have to campaign against every wrong in the world.

Also, making a simple and free protest is much easier than giving up the opportunity to compete in something you've probably dreamt of your whole life. Very different amount of weight.

No, can't stand football and the call to keep sport separate from politics seems entirely in keeping with the money grabbing aspects of the game. It's not politics or a difference of opinions, it's serious human rights violations. It takes a special someone to be able to separate that from anything.

I thought you were disputing the '6500 killed' in Qatar numbers? ;)

Are we gonna moan about the Qatar MotoGP as well?

Or is this just another pathetic football hating thread?

I don't know if you're going to or not but the place fucking sucks and I don't think any sport should be going there until they get their act together.

Oh yes. But folk turn a blind eye when it's the posh F1 folk. BTW, F1 was dropped just for this year. Wonder why ? ;)

Not everyone though. People will turn a blind eye so they can watch the football... but not everyone.
