Many people seem to be getting confused between fuel cell technology (which uses Hydrogen gas to power the fuel cell to produce electricity and water) and ICE engines tweaked to burn the gas.

The big problems with fuel cells or ICEs burning Hydrogen as a fuel are:

- how you make it i... the vast majority of hydrogen production still uses natural gases - Japan appears to have done a deal with Australia under the former administration for the Aussies to mine coal and process it in Oz (thereby creating lots of greenhouse gasses locally) before shipping the gas in liquified form to Japan
- how you make it ii... if you split water to H2 and O2, you need a lot of energy which has to be sourced from somewhere
- how you store it... you can compress it and even liquify it but that takes a lot of energy and the storage containers are bulky

Hydrogen ICEs have an extra problem:

- how you burn it... most people think Hydrogen is a zero emissions fuel because it burns to water, but burn ANYTHING in air and you get NOx pollutants, which means it's not a zero emissions engine and currently wouldn't satisfy EU / UK legislation that demands zero tail pipe emissions

Plus the mpg you get from ICE is always gonna be loads worse because leccy motors are anywhere between 2 and 10 times more efficient depending on the driving condition.

Hydrogen ICE is gonna be mostly for niche and emotive reasons IMO.

Transporting electricity doesn't require you to physically move anything, thus giving you a huge overall efficiency gain.
