Mot history. ?

Been looking at second hand bike's recently and there seems to be quite a few have dodgy mot/ mileage history. Some have gone down in odo miles, some have swapped from miles to kilometers, some have year gaps.

Had a look at a 2011 gsxr 1000 today, just a comfort test really, and yes, very comfortable with twin akras. Looked pretty clean, except back wheel had chips, lovely colour. Anyway, I use this for checking history, if I can't see the plate, I don't bother with it.

So what are your main warning signs when looking for secondhand bike's. Here's the gsxr.

In that shop the bike's are squashed in that tight you can't lift them off the stand, that pissed me off, no business of me.

With older bikes I often see that the bike's had no MOT for a few years or minimal miles between MOT's,then I guess the owner decides to sell as the bike's not been used.Of course,some owners may have falsified the mileage...

I've had numerous old bikes where the clocks stopped working for a year or were replaced between Mots. The MOT recorded mileage would look mental from a buyer's pov but were totally legit. At that price point, second hand knackers, you're better off using your eyes and ears.

I think the last MOT's for my old FZ750 & XT600 are from 2017 & my little SV650 had no MOT for a couple of years on it's MOT history.
One year the XT600 only did 67 miles between MOT's.
The local MOT tester says he gets a few bikes every year were the only recorded mileage is from the MOT station & the return trip for it's next MOT

If I'm even thinking about a vehicle I have a look at its MoT history. It paints quite a picture with all the detail available.

And yes, if the MOT doesn't match up, walk away.

I'm not too fussed about a stamped service history, so long as there are receipts for oil, filters, sump plug crush washer, etc, a log of when things were done, and the receipts match that history.

I look at the general state of the bike - if there are loads of bolt ons, etc, I'd walk away. I would also check to see if that has been mapped for those end cans. I bet it hasn't, so it will run slightly worse at certain revs; have those cans got removeable baffles in them? Again, something the consider for future MOT's.

Not impressed by that cargo net thing on the rear seat - Says a lot about the dealer if they can't be arsed to remove stuff like that when taking photos to sell it.

Oh yeah, just spotted those, and it doesn't look like it has bar weights either (could be the angle of the photo).

Check the radiator to see if the fins are mullered.

Basically, don't trust the dealership to have done anything with the bike. They've probably washed and Mr Sheene'd it, then stuck it in the showroom. I doubt they've serviced it (despite a stamp).

That's more like it.

The fact that Suzuki aren't making any more GSXR's means that every Tom, Dick and Charlatan dealer will use this as an excuse to charge way over the odds for any GSXR. I'd look at another brand - GSXR's are good (I've had a couple), but other 1000cc bikes are just as good, if not better. I mean, my '18 plate S1000XR will be as good on the road, if not better, than an '11 Gixer 1K, and more comfortable. You can pick XR's up for not much more than that Gixer.
