There was a bloke in Doncaster put an R1 engine in a Bond Bug, he used to blatt it up and down the dual carriageway by the Dome where all the car guys used to meet up (we're talking 20+ years ago), I used to go race them on my R6 and get my knee down on McDonalds car park.

I bet it was a proper death trap.

But a new seat cover is like £100. Same as the weird battery box/setup, you'd want to change that too.. but overall.... i love it.

As a child I was scarred (but not terminally) by having to sit in the back of a succession of crappy three-wheelers after Dad gave up his motorbike and sidecar. The first was a Bond Minicar of evil memory. The bonnet flew off that going over Vauxhall Bridge, as I remember. That was followed by a succession of Reliants - Regals and Robins as I recall. I hated them. Thankfully after Mum spun one of them on black ice and flipped it onto its roof Dad saw the error of his ways and bought a real 4-wheeled car.

Just thought you'd like to know.

My brother bought one when he was despatch riding and doing night runs for a Kent company in a particularly harsh winter. The heater was a bit feeble, but it worked.

With a pair of Mini wheels fitted with mud-n-snows, that thing went just about anywhere any weather. I remember heading to the local ski slope on a morning when a couple of feet of snow had fallen. It was slightly disconcerting as the front wheel had a tendency to hop from rut to rut to follow the four wheelers car tracks but it got us to the slope and I enjoyed a morning's skiing in Kent

I saw one that had been hit head-on by an overtaking XR3i... the bodywork was smashed to bits, but was being fixed. The front swing arm had taken the brunt of the impact and written the XR3i off. Tougher than they looked, with a safety cage under the fibreglass.

I wrote off a Reliant by lobbing a Z1 at it. The bike alternator casing stripped the side of the car,door and all.

Reliants were actually pretty well built and reliable - there was very little to go wrong! They also were surprisingly effective in the traffic lights Grand Prix as their light weight (fibreglass body, aluminium engine) meant you could get them off the line quickly. After about 30mph they got slaughtered though...

But you know what kids are like - want what their mates have, don't want to be different etc., so we just wanted not to stick out like a sore thumb and be the butt of jokes. But they did tend to flip if they spun, and unless the driver was alert enough to switch the engine off quickly, they tended to catch fire and burn rapidly. Mum had the presence of mind to switch the engine off straight away, thankfully.
