Fark. Even royalty can go bonkers. Some of this story is way beyond anything rational.

Well, it was prescribed by the Royal Homeopathic Hospital? My Dad wouldn't have given a crap what it was, he'd long resigned himself to being very embarrassed when bleeding when signing things or tapping his pin in etc. So I think if they had said it was extract of dog poo he'd have still used it! It was a very painful condition with hands of a thousand paper cuts and despite their repeated best efforts, the NHS 'd dermatologists and allergy people never got to the bottom of it, but the RHH did first go!

Apparently, marigold podiatry is a thing!
Research-based medicine:
Marigold therapy is an integral part of homoeopathic podiatry. It comprises specially formulated medication applied topically in conjunction with podiatry. It is research based medicine which has been clinically evaluated in double blind placebo controlled trials at British Universities and NHS Trusts.

No. Alternative medicine becomes medicine when it passes a number of peer reviewed double blind clinical trials. If it's been around for a while and it hasn't passed this test you can pretty much assume it's bollocks. None of the things mentioned have done so are probably shite.
That said, if any of this stuff gives you peace and/or the results you want then I'm glad.

Marigold therapy, a painless, non-invasive form of topical treatment, which has been researched and developed by combining homeopathic medicinal plants such as Symphytum officinalis, Thuja occidentalis, Ruta graveolens, Rosemary officinalis, Bellis perennis, Hypericum perforatum and Calendula officinalis with different species of Tagetes. Homeopathic and biochemical medicines are prescribed orally when indicated.Taipan wrote: ↑Tue Nov 08, 2022 8:30 pm Apparently, marigold podiatry is a thing!

IIRC topical = dabbed on where needed

Yeah, but read the rest of the article.... "There appears to be no independent verification whatsoever of their claims."Taipan wrote: ↑Tue Nov 08, 2022 8:30 pm Apparently, marigold podiatry is a thing!

If the Royal Homeopathic hospital can only prescribe homeopathic treatments then logically they can only be prescribed to or by Royals.Taipan wrote: ↑Tue Nov 08, 2022 8:25 pmWell, it was prescribed by the Royal Homeopathic Hospital? The Crystal skulls only work if you've got the same shaped head as the Crystal your using for healing.Asian Boss wrote: ↑Tue Nov 08, 2022 7:35 pm As said acupuncture and meditation are proven. Erm, bollocks?
Oh sorry, wrong thread...
Acupuncture helped with sorting a persistent spasm issue in my lower back, but so did stretching exercises.
Meditation (another word for Prayer) is a huge help and I recommend this in the Biblical sense, Be Still, and Know that I Am God.

Bizarrely, they’ve done studies on intercessory prayer. No doubt funded by the US Christian lobby,the_priest wrote: ↑Tue Nov 08, 2022 10:27 pm Erm, bollocks?

I am not a true believer in the more flaky aspects of the medical fringes - homeopathy is dangerous, non-vaxxers are deluded, Reki is just nonsense.
There is quite a lot of evidence that people who negative/ depressed / pessimistic tend to get ill more often - with the assumption that those who are generally happier, are healthier. That then suggests that there is a holistic aspect to health - the mind does play a part.
I do believe that meditation etc plays a very important role for some - it takes them out of their angst ridden "now" and allows them to compartmentalise it.
Oesteopaths etc I do believe can help.
It's the general NHS service I worry about!

Re: Meditation, chakra, crystals, alternative medicine, therapies, accupuncture, do you ?
I find this and the responses quite interesting. Growing up far too close to Glastonbury led to me having a very big amount of cynicism for anything other than 'real' medicine
However, as one of those weirdos for whom pain meds just don't work (all the opiates either don't work to the point of me feeling perfectly fine to drive, or I need to take enough to be unconscious), I really wish I could try other stuff more easily right now!!
I did a couple of 'levels' of Reiki training, mostly because a load of girls I knew back then were all doing reiki with the same teacher and I had a bad feeling about it. It was interesting. When I did it on other people, there was a reasonable split between those that felt 'something' and those that sat frozen into place refusing to relax 'in case they felt something'. Not saying it is a thing or works, but if it makes people feel better for a while, whats the issue? Oh yes, the issue is when practitioners say that they can 'cure' illness or disease with it. That's just wrong
I had acupuncture and it was basically just interesting. Seemed to help a bit for a while, but not a cure. Equally, my main physio here works very hard on specific points on me. Maybe trigger points/pressure points/ etc - and that helps more than the acupuncture did. I did also do a course to be a reflexology practitioner. Which just works on the same principles as acupuncture but without the needles. It has helped a few people I know with toothache - a particular trigger point etc. But who knows? How do you prove it?
For me, meditation is amazing. But not the traditional sit in a quiet place and empty your mind. I can't do that. But, in discussions with the psychologist in rehab the first time, she explained that meditation is more about focus. You can focus on emptying your mind, or, you can focus on one thing and that automatically clears your mind. I walk up mountains on skis. When I do that, I count each step, rhythmically. 100% focus on the steps, the breathing, the environment. That does more for my mental state than sitting in a yoga class and trying to 'empty my mind'!! LOL She also suggested that riding a motorbike is similar (depending on where and how you are riding!!). 100% focus on what you are doing. Maybe she's right?
Never understood chakra things. But I love crystals. Not because people say they are healing etc. I just love rocks and stones and crystals look pretty! LOL I use essential oils, only because I like the smells and some of them help me sleep and some make the place smell nice when used in cleaning
I do think that for many people, the feeling of having someone be kind to them or focus on them for that 30, 45,60 minutes is as beneficial as whatever 'alternative treatment' they are having in that time
Soo, I'm sort of a cynical hippy

Re: Meditation, chakra, crystals, alternative medicine, therapies, accupuncture, do you ?
I'm a bit surprised that people think all herbal/home/folk remedies (like the marigold ointment) are all bolleaux and only double blind tested pharmaceuticals work. People had to use things that were available and some things got repeated use because they worked. Decent remedies for sleep, indigestion, skin problems, constipation etc etc were probably all available. (I suspect the problem with some of the over the counter versions is they're about 0.1% strength of some of the things they'd brew up...like valerian. Some of the herbal teas on supermarket shelves make me smile, there's hardly enough in some of them to flavour the water never mind do what they purport to do ).

I'm pretty sure that the active ingredients of 'marigold' have been clinically tested, probably not in a blinded trial because there's not really any point. As you say, there is some historical evidence that it works, for some, in some cases, but the efficacy is secondary to the safety. If it works for you, that's great, but you'd be mighty cross if it melted your skin off.

I'd be cross, true. I'd also be cross if, after years of having skin issues on my hands, I found that I had lanolin dermatitis exacerbated by the 'safe' lanolin and parabens in the prescribed treatments and they were making things worse. (I haven't, but I do wonder about cases like TPs dad, where 'nothing worked' until....).DefTrap wrote: ↑Wed Nov 09, 2022 3:20 pm I'm pretty sure that the active ingredients of 'marigold' have been clinically tested, probably not in a blinded trial because there's not really any point. Late M-I-L went through a stage of rubbing WD40 into her arthritic joints. Though I doubt it was that which eventually killed her, I don't think it did any good either. She smelt nice, though, in a sort of garagey way.

I have dry skin issues too...I find that the fancier a product is, the worse it is for me! The best thing is plan old hospital grade Cetraben, which I reckon you could also use to do the pins on sliding brake callipers. The "extras" in other products are detrimental for me.Count Steer wrote: ↑Wed Nov 09, 2022 3:54 pmI'd be cross, true. FFS my dad told me recently that this works, with a straight face. I showed him the WD40 FAQ page where it categorically states that this is nonsense. Didn't believe it.
