Firstly, hello everyone from the old place, it's been a while! :wave:

I've had a hiatus from bikes in the last few years but I've got the urge again, I'm going to pick one up over winter while they're a bit cheaper.

I don't want a super lightweight wrist breaking sports bike but at the same time I don't want to be sat bolt upright.

It'll be used for occasional commuting (dual carriageways and nationals) and some day trips over the Peaks. I've got to lug my laptop etc, I'd prefer if it went in a top box and not a backpack.

Budget is a few grand and there's some decent looking Sprint 1050's coming up in that bracket.

This post it twofold, is there anything I should be looking for in the triumphs, known faults or issues?

Is there an alternative bike I should be considering?

Sprints are pretty solid bikes, the 1050 engine is a peach (I may be biased as I own a Speed Triple 1050)

Other options:

VFR800 VTEC seems to work ok on later bikes but servicing is complicated/expensive

I did think about a viffer but many seem to have sky high mileage or poor condition for similar money

I've never ridden a triple but always fancied a daytona, best of all worlds right?

I have owned both the 1050 sprint and the vfr800 vtech. Both were great touring bikes, both heavy, with a high CG. The sprint was surprisingly fast, the viffer not so much.
In terms of finish, the viffer was very well put together, the Triumph, well it's a Triumph, so ok.
If I were to choose again, it would be the 1050. Having also had a speed triple, it's a fantastic engine, probably my all time favourite.
Watch out for rear suspension linkage and tank sender unit. I had issues with both.

The world is your oyster as you are looking in the section of bikes that nobody really desires strongly .....not a sports bike latest track ready weapon and not a long distance ADV, "lets go to the Pyrenees/NC500 tour". Allows you loads of scope without paying the high ticket price.

Lots of decent choices already suggested, factor in service costs (VFR's) as well as ease of luggage fitment as you want a topbox.

ST1050, GT1050 or VFR 800. I have a later model ST and its a great all-rounder....

I used to have a VFR, and yes, the big services are expensive, but only every 16k miles. The engine is pretty bulletproof, and I actually found the vtec feature useful, particularly for overtaking. I have also ridden bikes with the Triumph 1050 engine, and it is as good as it's cracked up to be.

Choose either one and you will be happy.
