Exploding Pyrex!

Mrs went to get the Pyrex measuring jug out the cupboard and it exploded like a bomb as soon as her hand touched it Hadn't been heated/cooled, it has been sitting in the cupboard for over a week. It shot shrapnel everywhere, in the cupboard and halfway across the kitchen. Nuts

Same thing happened to our patio door a few weeks back. No one near it, loud bang and a million pieces. Pyrex is just a specialised (very) tough toughened glass.

Tempered glass at its finest. Same thing happened to the rear windows on my mum's car years ago.

Same thing happened with a glass cooker top at my Mum's - posted about it on here. It went bang at room temperature in an empty kitchen. I was still finding bits of glass a year later.

Same thing happened to me once in a pub with a pint of beer. Went to pick it up and it just exploded.

I was about 19 at the time, probably quite scruffy, a bit spotty. Suffice it to say, the landlord did not believe me

Pyrex is just a specialised (very) tough toughened glass.

The industrial stuff still made by Coning is, everything else is just a tradename.

I would be looking in that same cupboard for any unglazed, chipped or otherwise potentially hazardous ceramic ware.

The edge of say a chipped mug would be sharp enough and crucially, hard enough to create a stress riser in the already highly stressed glass. Flowerpot would do the same just by rubbing against it or a few chips of ceramic on the shelf might damage the pyrex base. Another good way to achieve this effect is when moving/stacking items and accidentally knocking the base against the top of some other ceramic item.

NSI or Nickel Sulphide Inclusion is what we call it. It's an impurity in the glass. Gets into the glass at manufacturing and over time even years it slowly expands exerting great pressure on the glass. We are talking something. 002 mm in size can't be seen by the naked eye. Dealt with lots of it over the years No manufacturer will guarantee glass NSI free. Heat soaking glass removes 90% but it but cost £££ more than tempered glass It can happen anytime. Tend to get lots more in hot weather. Had to change out every balcony glass on a whole estate a few years back as several went bang. In Windows/doors you get a trademark we call spectacles or Panda eyes but only microscopic analysis can actually confirm it. Tables glassware etc just goes bang and turn into what we call dice.
If its in the glass less than 21% depth wise its fine more than that is in the tempered zone and exerts as much as 10,000lbs psi so glass goes bang.

Some users may remember that my home made dining table has tempered glass legs...two sheets of custom made* 19mm thick tempered glass. I chose low Iron glass (Saint Gobain Diamant IIRC) because it's super clear rather that slightly green. A nice bi product of low Iron glass however is that the method they use to remove/control Iron also removes Nickel, so the chances of an NSI related failure are much lower Kinda handy when you're relying on the glass to keep the table top off your legs.

*That's not saying a great deal, the nature of the manufacturing process means pretty much all tempered glass is custom made

You guys may laugh, but everything I touch at home gave me a 'mini' electric shock - well, more like static

But, that hasn't happened for a while (in two other houses), so now I'm thinking I might need to get the electrics in the apartment checked
