Stupid KTM !!!!!

Post by Yorick »

I'm planning to get a new Husky and yesterday my pal said he'd been planning to get the new KTM300TPI until he discovered that they are reverting to premix on new bikes. I assume Husqvarna will be the same.

He's refusing to have a premix bike. Me too. It's a stupid idea.

WTF ?????

Or you could be in the middle of nowhere when the mixer pump shits itself and you seize up

The bike will be a few grams lighter without the oil pump gubbins.

Hardly surprising considering the number of issues with TPI pumps and the requirement for changing them every 80 hours. Then needing the official dongle to prime them.

Back in the day I just carried around half a litre of 2t oil for emergencies. I think the bike had an oil feed, it just didn't work any more.

A quick google shows 36,000 results for KTM TPI oil pump failure. Its been all over the forums since it was introduced.

Its in the maintenance schedule - 80 hours, some last forever, some fail. Obviously enough have failed and given the TPI bikes a reputation for it, so KTM to have decided to ditch it. Probably because they weren't being changed at the recommended schedule like lots of other parts.

They were sold as premix bikes for years so it's not a deal breaker for most, there'll be people who welcome the change. It's not hard to stuff a small bottle of oil in your bag. I rode two stroke enduro bikes for years, pull into petrol station, stick in fuel, splosh of two stroke and off you go.

Do petrol stations still have 2T oil pumps? I remember them from being a petrol pump attendant in the mid '70s, but have never needed to look for one since.

Funnily enough, I did see one in deepest darkest Wales a year or two back.

I did the same and remember the adjuster for ratio and then a full pump of the plunger with those into the tank. Used to fill a Wartburg up regularly! Also had a Redex gun!
