It was a standard school trip when I was a kid, also standard trip when family had out of town visitors.
I remember going to see the Mary Rose too and thinking it would be impossibly far off in the future when they stopped spraying it with special preserving fluid. IIRC they finished doing it about 10 years ago.

They've been telling that joke for at least 50 years... Went to school in Portsmouth for a while, lost count of how many days I buggered off to the Victory instead of showing up at School.slowsider wrote: ↑Mon Oct 24, 2022 4:17 pm As long as it's not a glass of what he was pickled in.

Ive been on the Victory. I'm not surprised he fell where he did, someone's nailed a chunk of wood to the deck there.

You probably weren't the first to be buggered on the Victory either.ZRX61 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 25, 2022 6:02 pmThey've been telling that joke for at least 50 years... Bloody hell! I thought I was old, but I was an apprentice in the 1960s, not the 1760s.

Most forms of death are unpleasant, but that has to be very close to the top of my 'please not that way' list...slowsider wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 4:58 pm If you go down in the woods today...

Who doesn't love a government that makes it up as they go along. I mean it's only government money they are squandering and there's always more where that came from. And when you've run out just blame Tory cuts, your face painted supporters will lap it up.

For some reason I had Googled the Victory a few days ago, and was surprised how old she was when Nelson used her as his flagship. So yes, I knew, but only because I Googled it.

Brilliant ship to work on being all wood it made a change from the metal on the other warships and subs in for repair and refits, The "tourists" only get shown parts of the ship but the other parts such as the keel were outstanding to admire.Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 10:44 pmFor some reason I had Googled the Victory a few days ago, and was surprised how old she was when Nelson used her as his flagship. Re: In todays news...
It's all being done by BAE Systems I believe? I'm basing that on the signs they had up last time I did the tour, which come to think of it was....nearly 20 years ago during the Trafalgar 200 celebrations! I don't think she's had her top masts for a long while now?
