I don't know how I could evidence that other than I always get my oil from Amazon and my filters over the counter from Wemoto. But I cannot then prove I put those filters and oil on/in my bike.

Re: Triple Trouble - Consumer Rights
How can a non genuine filter cause clutch or cam problems?
Write a letter enclosing a quote for the repairs from a trusted mechanic. Ask them to approve the repairs and cover the cost, or have it done at a stealership offering a warranty.
State clearly that if they do not agree to option 1 or 2 then you will approach the local trading standards ossifer with a view to court action, or take them to the small claims court.
The bike was obviously not of merchantable quality when sold, nor were the replacement parts.
My fee (chargeable to Triumph) is a very reasonable 12.5% of the total judgement.

By not filtering properly, one assumes. Clutch and cam both come into contact with the oil in pretty important ways.
Bit of a stretch to think that's the causes though.

Wasn't there a legal ruling about 10-15 years ago that said non OE stuff was acceptable and wasn't an excuse to walk on a warranty claim.
Back when I sold clutches for a living I had dealers come to me for a reconditioning because of supply issues with OE stuff, the dealer would have to order the part, pay for it and try to claim it back off the manufacturer. I specifically remember problems with CityRover, the Chinese MGs and Santana Landys. One main Ford dealer would buy a 40 quid Ka clutch off me rather than for OE because a certain elderly customer went through one a month.

AFAIK EU law prevents manufacturers from stopping warranty claims on the grounds of non-OE parts or mechanics.
It's certainly possible an oil filter would kill your engine, but it'd have to be a pretty shitty one!

GSXR1100/Bandit OE filters used to be Japanese made. Now they're just Chinese knock offs.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 9:21 pm AFAIK EU law prevents manufacturers from stopping warranty claims on the grounds of non-OE parts or mechanics.

I tend to use Mahle, never had a problem. That 119k GPZ5 had just whatever M&P sold, I knew a guy who raced a CBR 600 back in the day and he bulk bought them, luckily they fitted the GPZ5.

Servicing is overrated.
The In laws got a Kia Rio 1.5 diesel to 100k miles without a single service, not even an oil change (just top ups).

I had a Talbot Sunbeam that I forgot about servicing, I did 32000 miles in it with out even checking the oil, and that was on top of the 60000 it had when I bought it. Never had any engine problems with it, the suspension bushes wore out before the engine did.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 9:33 pm Servicing is overrated.

Re: Triple Trouble - Consumer Rights
Can I ask a simple question, did you PAY for a warranty or just have a standard manufacturers guarantee?
There is a difference that is quite important. A 12 month guarantee means just that,.even for any replacement items.
A warranty on the other hand is a legal contract that covers items for a fixed period, however, as I read it, resets if items are replaced.
To be on your 3rd set of cams/clutch after 38k does sound quite excessive. Are you some kind of stunt/wheelie king/queen? Or perhaps do Goose starts every morning (Google it)

Could also be that this bike has some other seemingly unrelated fault which manifests itself in the OPs failures.

Re: Triple Trouble - Consumer Rights
I didn't pay for a warranty nor would I as I'm protected by consumer rights. If it wasn't fit for the purpose for which it was sold to me blah blah blah. The cams were replaced six months after the warranty run out because of this.Demannu wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 10:21 pm Can I ask a simple question, did you PAY for a warranty or just have a standard manufacturers guarantee?

I think there is an issue with these clutches. I ride a bike in the way that it's supposed to be ridden and I've got bits of paper that say I'm a skilled, advanced rider.
I care for my bikes - ok, so I don't clean exhaust headers but I change the oil/filter between services, I clean my callipers and don't get anywhere near the end of the life of my brake pads, tyres, chains and sprockets before replacing them etc.
I considered this and now I've read this post, I'm considering it again as I love riding Street Triples and I'm going to miss it but I also just want a working bike. Now! I'm sick of thinking about it and dealing with it. Despite the hassle it's caused me, I'm going to be tearful giving it back.David wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 6:11 pm How can a non genuine filter cause clutch or cam problems?

Re: Triple Trouble - Consumer Rights
Getting another dealer to repair it and Triumph footing the bill is NOT happening, no siree, no chance... Move on from that in my opinion. Triumph are simply not going to do that.

Agreeing with Weeksy, to clarify that ^ , I meant that it's part-ex'd as it is now and Triumph cover the dealer's subsequent repair costs.Horse wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 11:29 amFrom Triumph' PoV, if you buy another bike then they can (probably) absorb the costs of fixing your bike.Trinity765 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 10:39 am I have been speaking with the local dealer. I've told them how my bike is, that I'd like a decent trade in value for it and that I'm consulting a solicitor. They are talking to the factory - not heard that one before - and they will get back to me tomorrow.
if I can get one at a reasonable price I'd be content.

Re: Triple Trouble - Consumer Rights
We had relentless aggro with a 30 month old car we'd had from new, the last 3 months it spent more time in the garage than it did on our driveway.
In the end I told the dealer and manufacturer I didn't want it back until guaranteed it was fixed which they couldn't guarantee, so asked me what I wanted to do - I told them to trade it in against another car which they did. They gave me a top-end trade-in price, then re-sold the car on their main dealer forecourt.
I'd push for similar with Triumph - they'll be happy with you buying another bike from them and will either retail your bike or send off to a smaller dealer to retail.

Re: Triple Trouble - Consumer Rights
I feel like I'm doing the right thing - putting the ball in their court.
Looking around at the market for second hand 2019 Street Triple RS' with such high mileage, I'd be lucky to get 6k for it privately, even in good working order. So if Triumph give me anything over 4k I'd be doing ok.

Someone commented on a house buying thread recently, when you ring them and say "hi it's Trinity", if they say "sorry, who" then you've not been ringing them enough

No different from any manafacturer of consumer goods.
Could be that the bike model in question has had very few warranty claims, so selling you an extended warranty is money in their pockets for nothing.Trinity765 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 3:07 pm
They suggested that I take out an extended warranty. I'm not paying for one...
Why not buy an early 675, which are cheap? I rode my mates 765 back to back with my 675, and the 675 was much smoother, just not quick top end. Much simpler instruments too.

I had a 2009 675 from new and a 2012 R from almost new and loved them both - no issues. The 2009 had 63,000 on the clock when I sold it, the 2012 had over 40,000.Whysub wrote: ↑Fri Oct 14, 2022 10:48 amNo different from any manafacturer of consumer goods.

If I end up getting a Speed Twin, I can see myself getting something mid-range next summer. Another Street or maybe an MT09.
