WSBK - Portimao
Portimao WorldSBK FP1 Results: Michael Ruben Rinaldi springs surprise to lead Garrett Gerloff
Results from Free Practice 1, round nine of the 2022 WorldSBK Championship at Portimao, Portugal.
Michael Ruben Rinaldi topped the opening Portimao WorldSBK practice ahead of GRT Yamaha rider Garrett Gerloff.
Despite being held up in the final corner by fellow Yamaha rider Christophe Ponsson, Toprak Razgatlioglu’s first flying lap saw him set a time of 1:41.532s which was a tenth quicker than Jonathan Rea who was in clean air.
Razgatlioglu was then on course to better his time by nearly half a second, the only rider set to improve by such a margin, before a big moment at the final corner saw the reigning Superbike champion abandon the lap.
The Turkish star did eventually lower the benchmark time as he set a 1:41.249s, with Rea also improving in order to go +0.107s down on Razgatlioglu.
It was a slow start to FP1 for leader of the WorldSBK Standings Alvaro Bautista, as the Aruba.it Ducati rider was over a second down following his first few laps.
While sector one was continuing to pose problems for Bautista, the Spanaird was able to reduce the deficit to Razgatlioglu throughout the remainder of the lap, thus moving up to fourth place with half the session completed.
Gerloff also found pace to go fifth quickest, before suffering a big moment on the front-end heading into turn one.

Lucas Mahias, who looks set to leave WorldSBK and return to WorldSSP following the 2022 season, was surprisingly spotted without sponsors on his Puccetti Kawasaki machine.
Enjoying a strong start to the weekend after scoring just two points in Catalunya, Scott Redding was a consistent top five challenger as Razgatlioglu and Rea remained at the front of the field.
Gerloff, who was over two tenths down on his latest effort, then produced a brilliant final sector to leapfrog Razgatlioglu and take over at the front.
The American then improved again on his next lap as he extended the gap from himself to Razgatlioglu to +0.167s.
Like Gerloff, Rinaldi proved to be extremely strong in the final sector as he jumped from seventh to first with a first sub 1m 41s lap.
There was a late fall for Mahias as the French rider went down at turn three.
Two riders making their final appearances of the season at Portimao are Ponsson and Roberto Tamburini as the pair won’t be participating in the non-European rounds in Argentina, Indonesia and Australia.

Portimao WorldSBK FP2 Results: Toprak Razgatlioglu smokes the chasing pack
Results from Free Practice 2, round nine of the 2022 WorldSBK Championship at Portimao, Portugal.
Toprak Razgatlioglu dominates WorldSBK FP2 in Portimao as Jonathan Rea and Alvaro Bautista complete the top three.
After a small delay due to red flags being shown in the preceding WorldSSP300 FP2 session, WorldSBK FP2 got underway with Alex Lowes setting the fastest time.
Iker Lecuona then went quicker than the Kawasaki rider after setting a time of 1:41.524s, which was his best lap of the weekend to that point while also enough to hold off Rea who jumped in second spot.
Seemingly running into trouble aboard his R1, Razgatlioglu made a quick return to pit lane as Rea went a tenth quicker than Lecuona.
Like Razgatlioglu in FP1, Rea was managing to keep hold on P1 despite being slower in the final sector compared to Lecuona and series leader Bautista.
The Aruba.it Ducati rider, who was beginning to look more and more menacing after a slow start to FP1, then went quicker than Rea by over two tenths, as Lecuona closed in on the six-time world champion for second.
Marvin Fritz suffered a fast crash at the final corner but was unhurt as he got back to his feet immediately.

With his front brake issues sorted, Razgatlioglu stamped his authority on the Portimao circuit as he went half a second clear of Bautista with his first flying lap.
Despite his stunning time of 1:40.720s, Razgatlioglu was again less than impressed with his Pata Yamaha machine as he returned to pit lane once again.
Out of pit lane for his third stint, Razgatlioglu was off the pace compared to the time he set earlier, instead focusing on race pace.
As Razgatlioglu and Rea exchanged positions during the final few minutes, the pair began to ramp up the pace as they both went red in the first sector before both lost time as the lap went on and therefore failed to improve.

Re: WSBK - Portimao
I wonder if it’ll be a shock to Gagne or whether he’s just taking a bit of time to get used to Portimao again, thing is he’s on his own bike and he knows Portimao well. Only difference I believe is they’ve had to fit the different gearbox and that’s it.

Portimao WorldSBK FP3 Results: Toprak Razgatlioglu sets new lap record
Results from Free Practice 3, round nine of the 2022 WorldSBK Championship at Portimao, Portugal.
Toprak Razgatlioglu leads a Pata Yamaha 1-2 in WorldSBK FP3 at Portimao following another dominant display.
Jonathan Rea was the early pace setter as he set his fastest lap of the weekend on just his second flying lap.
A time of 1:40.951s was set by Rea which was nearly five tenths clear of Alex Lowes. Michael Ruben Rinaldi had a disastrous start to FP3 after suffering a big blow up on the entry to turn six. Unable to return to pit lane, Rinaldi immediately pulled off track as Rea improved once again to set the quickest lap of the weekend so far.
Continuing Honda’s strong showing, Xavi Vierge went third fastest after a brilliant final sector. One place further back was series leader Alvaro Bautista, while Razgatlioglu was struggling for early pace as he settled for sixth - seven tenths off Rea.
Down in 16th after the opening run, Andrea Locatelli then bolted to the top of the leaderboard after setting four red sectors.
On a very good race run, Bautista’s pace was continuing to see him challenge the fastest times deep into his stint. Sector four was once again proving to be a big strength for the Ducati rider.

Then came a stunning lap from Razgatlioglu as the reigning WorldSBK champion went five tenths clear after setting a new lap record.
Razgatlioglu, who set his new lap record on the SCX tyre, then set another three laps that were comfortably quicker than Locatelli's best effort.
There was a big moment under braking for Loris Baz at turn five, which resulted in the BMW rider having to stop his M 1000 RR trackside.
Two riders making their final appearances of the season at Portimao are Ponsson and Roberto Tamburini as the pair won’t be participating in the non-European rounds in Argentina, Indonesia and Australia.
Luca Bernardi is also making his final appearance of the season after being dropped by Barni Racing Ducati for the final three races. Bernardi will move back to WorldSSP with CM Racing Ducati, as Xavi Fores is set to replace him for the remainder of the season.
Axel Bassani has signed a new deal at Motocorsa Ducati, taking the tally of confirmed WorldSBK riders for 2023 up to 18.

These cunts are just incredible. As much as I love Toprak and dislike JR you’ve got to hand it to him, to pull that time out of the bag is mind boggling, Toprak has been mind boggling since FP2 but fook me it’s gonna be a superb race later on.

Results from Superpole, round nine of the 2022 WorldSBK Championship at Portimao, Portugal.
Jonathan Rea sets a new WorldSBK lap record to beat Toprak Razgatlioglu to pole position in Portimao.
After setting a new lap record in FP3, Razgatlioglu then broke his own record on just his first flying lap.
A stunning time of 1:39.887s was set by Razgatlioglu which is also the first-ever sub 1m40s lap on Superbike machinery around Portimao.
Second was Rea after the opening run, however, the six-time world champion was over five tenths down on Razgatlioglu.
Fifth was Alvaro Bautista as the Ducati rider was struggling to close the gap that’s seemingly been there between himself and Razgatlioglu so far this weekend.
Although Honda have looked stronger than BMW so far this weekend, Scott Redding found a lot of time compared to FP3 in order to slot into fourth spot - three places better off than Iker Lecuona in seventh.
Razgatlioglu then went even quicker on his next lap around but it was Rea who had the last laugh after a brilliant sector three set the Kawasaki rider up to take over top spot.

Portimao WorldSBK Race (1) Results: Toprak Razgatlioglu holds off Alvaro Bautista for victory
Results from Race 1, round nine of the 2022 WorldSBK Championship at Portimao, Portugal.
Toprak Razgatlioglu claimed victory in race one at Portimao, while WorldSBK series leader Alvaro Bautista beat Jonathan Rea to second.
Following a big accident in the WorldSSP300 race that resulted in Victor Steeman being transported to Hospital with polytrauma and head injuries, the opening Portimao WorldSBK race got under after a lengthy delay of over an hour.
With a new race distance of 14 laps instead of the original 20 that was planned, Alex Lowes made the most of his early pace as he took second place away from Razgatlioglu at turn five.
Rea remained the leader after making a great start, while Alvaro Bautista lost one place from fourth to fifth.
Continuing to lead at the front although Razgatlioglu was closing, Rea was remaining consistent with his lap times, not something Lowes was managing as he lost third and fourth to Axel Bassani and Bautista.
There was an early retirement for Hafizh Syahrin as the former MotoGP rider hit technical issues.
Razgatlioglu then took the lead away from Rea with a brilliant move at turn one on lap five.

Pushed slightly wide as a result, Rea was then under intense pressure from Bassani and Bautista who was closing.
After a scruffy couple of laps from Bassani, Bautista crucially picked off his fellow Ducati rider to claim P3.
Unleashed after getting through on Bassani, Bautista began closing in on Rea and Razgatlioglu at a rapid rate.
Bautista closed a near nine tenth lead from Rea on lap eight as he hauled himself into victory contention.
An easy overtake for second was then completed along the start-finish straight by Bautista, however, the series leader ran wide on the exit of turn one, gifting Rea back the position.
Bautista finally made the move stick one lap later although the battling between Bautista and Rea gave Razgatlioglu a lead of 1.4 seconds.
Seventh heading into the final lap, Scott Redding dropped to 18th after a costly mistake at turn five.

Re: WSBK - Portimao
Alvaro is like that ex that never leaves you alone. Always seems to happen, the tracks where they say “it’ll be damage limitation” for him and he comes out not too far from the win. Wonder if it had been the full 20 laps, he’s a pain in the farter
