His final Grand Prix tally was seven championships, 52 wins and 121 podiums from just 152 starts, plus 8 TT wins from 14 starts, and a Formula TT title.
Pretty impressive in any generation, not just one where he was up against Ago and Hailwood.

He had the misfortune to be racing in the same period as Mike Hailwood, otherwise he'd have won a lot more championships. and he freely admitted as such. He had that edge to him that all top racers need. He was probably the Max Biaggi of his generation, up against Valentino Rossi (Hailwood). But he beat Ago to a 500cc WC on the MV, so he could certainly ride.
