Re: Energy bills
Not used the oven for 7 days. Used a air fryer / slow cooker. 2kw saved on the previous week.
Also noticed there is a street lamp at the bottom of my garden, loads of foliage around the base of it.
Would you be tempted to nick a little leccy from it?

Re: Energy bills
Not sure if this should go in the Energy bills or Ukraine thread.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/ ... 7e8107b31eThe Swedish national broadcaster SVT is reporting that seismologists registered explosions near the Nord Stream pipelines in the last 36 hours. In a report published in the last few minutes it said:
SVT can reveal that measuring stations in both Sweden and Denmark registered strong underwater explosions in the same area as the gas leaks on Monday. ‘There is no doubt that these are explosions,’ says Björn Lund, lecturer in seismology at the Swedish National Seismic Network, SNSN.
The first explosion was recorded at 2.03am on the night of Monday and the second at 7.04pm on Monday evening.
The warnings about the gas leaks came from the maritime administration at 1.52pm and 8.41pm on Monday, respectively, after ships detected bubbles on the surface.
SVT has obtained the coordinates of the measured explosions and they are in the same area where the gas leaks were registered.
It further quoted Lund saying of the measurements: “You can clearly see how the waves bounce from the bottom to the surface. There is no doubt that it was a blast. We even had a station in Gnosjö that picked this up.”

Update, Sweden now treating as sabotage. Wonder who could have blown the pipeline up Might need to call Sherlock for something this tricky
Swedish police said it has launched a preliminary investigation into possible sabotage related to the Nord Stream 1 gas leak in the Baltic Sea.
“We have established a report and the crime classification is gross sabotage,” a national police spokesperson said, according to Reuters.
It comes as the US said it is ready to provide support to European partners investigating the leak.

Coincidentally the breaks happened pretty close to the new Poland-Norway pipeline, mistaken target?

The US is currently being run by total morons, no one is in charge. It does not surprise me in the least that this empty presidency has led to such a catastrophic and idiotic act of industrial terrorism.

Do you mean that:
"Lack of firm leadership meant that maverick US actors felt enabled to sabotage the pipelines"
Or
"Lack of firm leadership meant the Russian actors felt free to sabotage the pipelines without fear of repercussions"
If the latter, it's not as if Russia hasn't undertaken harmful actions abroad before, 'Salisbury' being one example.

Re: Energy bills
I mean that the USA without an actual president is being run by a ragbag of corporate interest groups, manipulating/using/lobbying nominally elected politician to further their economic agendas. I appreciate that yes, this is exactly how "democracy" works but without the appropriate checks/balances and firm leadership, it has become amplified to these extremes.Horse wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 7:40 am Sorry, I'm confused.

I might be wrong but I see no benefit whatsoever in Putin destroying (or crippling) the only lifeline that may save his failed agenda. My understanding is that certain EU countries were more than happy to circumvent sanctions and accept Russian gas. Well, that's the end of that idea.
And, don't worry, good ole' USA will step in and help by incorporating you funny little Europeans into our own energy agenda.
Thus was the Empire forged. Same game different day. The stakes may be bigger as the world gets smaller but that is the nature of a zero sum game.

Re: Energy bills
That's what I thought but, on reflection, it takes away a bargaining chip. ie if you're all good little stooges and let us have that chunk of Ukraine and keep Crimea, we'll let you have some Russian gas. That particular energy blackmail play is pretty much off the table via Nordstream I and II now until such time as repairs and recommissioning can be done.
The fact that the Europeans and the Russians were all initially going was quite interesting.
Could still have been the Russians accepting that energy sales to the EU are effectively finished. Have to be bonkers to swallow that hook again - while 'Putain' is still there (and his likely replacements).

Re: Energy bills
I fail to see how allowing even a small amount of gas to flow through the pipelines would "save his failed agenda". After all, the western European winter energy die is already pretty much cast so Russian destruction would absolve Putin from any need to publicly close down the pipelines.Screwdriver wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 8:33 am I might be wrong but I see no benefit whatsoever in Putin destroying (or crippling) the only lifeline that may save his failed agenda.
My understanding is that what's standing in the way of Putin achieving his self professed goal of absorbing Ukraine into the Russian Federation is the tenacity and resolve of Ukrainian military armed with weapons supplied by Western democracies

Re: Energy bills
I am not suggesting Putin could use this pipeline "now" to save Russia from economic collapse but in the longer term, I believe it will be essential. I cop out with a nonspecific "agenda" because I don't know what Putin's ambitions are during this live online, realtime shitfest. To be fair, I think the goalposts have been shifting a fair bit.irie wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 9:30 amI fail to see how allowing even a small amount of gas to flow through the pipelines would "save his failed agenda". If there is some reason why it could potentially help Putin by destroying/crippling this massive economic bridge between us, I'm all ears.
But for Putin to say: "Ok you fuckers, give me what I want or I shoot myself in the other foot". I don't buy it.
Looks like regular US imperialism to me.

Re: Energy bills
Slight detour but...how was it done?
A surface ship dropping depth charges would be pretty obvious (particularly a US flagged one).
Limpet mines type of thing...again a surface ship would be pretty obvious.
Submarine? Despite best efforts I think we can safely say the location of those are known to opposing powers.
From the air? Not much moves up there untracked.
Overpressurisation? That'd take some doing on a temporarily decommissioned and a not yet fully commissioned line.
The people that did it know who did it (obvs) but I'm betting that some of the people that didn't know beyond reasonable doubt too.
PS It could still have been Russians...just not the government.

Re: Energy bills
I saw a suggestion on a news site that 'something' could have been dropped/deployed from a commercial vessel. Russian ships legitimately traverse that area all the time after all.
Have to say I'm also struggling to see what the point of this attack is. From Russia's POV it basically guarantees that Western Europe is going to move away from Russian gas ASAP. Maybe it's to drive up prices further so that the other gas Russia is selling to other people fetches more? Demonstrating how easy it is for pipelines to be 'accidentally' damaged perhaps and putting the shits up Norway's new pipe?
This whole situation is getting more and more fucked every day, one wonders what's next. Kinda don't want to find out

Re: Energy bills
Had I been tasked with the gig, I'd rock up in an old fishing trawler, send the Seals to mine it, retire to a safe distance (in spacetime) and remote detonate it at my leisure.
If there are ANY curious anomalies in the US coastguard shipping database up to a few weeks prior, that would do it for me because even a dark old fishing trawler should be track and traced to the n'th degree these days...

Nobody mentioned China yet? 'Ah you have a lot of gas to get rid of? Pull up a chair and let us talk price'.
