I hope so as I am hoping to make this (1,800mm x 1,800mm x 150mm)! Although I won't be relying on B&Q for absolute accuracy in the cutting (learned the hard way).

I just need to work out the best way to cut the slot joints, current plan is build a crosscut sled for the table saw with an indexing peg the same width as the saw blade and trench them out en masse once I have cut the first slot 'freehand'. Slots will either be 12mm or 15mm depending on material.

Alternatively, I'll have to make a router template and cut them individually...

...or seeing what the cost of sending it out to a CNC / laser cutting company to make the parts for me to assemble.

Excellent news and it is quite the opposite from defeat. I am firmly of the opinion that making full use of our precious limited resources is actually the answer to the problems the world is now facing.

Also similarly it was constructed mainly with the masses of odd timber you accumulate when you demolish/rebuild a house. Not throwing it away, sawn timber is expensive!

Thanks, I am busy getting on with stuff. I just need a bit more space and I'll be knocking out a bike (probably an XT500).

Wood is "sustainable" yes but I fear this overused phrase is more often used as an excuse to generate/tolerate waste so it is really important I think for all of us to do the best we can to manage our own use of materials.

Looks like a really interesting design and I would be happy to give you a few pointers from what I can see (largely regarding your intersections).

Not sure what your skill level is in Sketchup and I don't want to assume to know better.

I have found BandQ to be excellent for cutting within 1mm but you have to get the right person and give them precise instruction. But those large curves are going to need CNC/laser/wazer so I'd get them sent out for that.

Then you get into the world of producing a suitable file/drawing for CNC and that in itself can be a minefield though for a simple 2d cut, should be little more than a good scale diagram.

Re CNC. There's quite a few around now but CNC-IT in Rudgwick, Surrey do some amazing stuff (I first saw them when they did a wood spiral staircase with external storage/bookshelves for a house on TV). Worth a look even if just for interest at cnc-it.co.uk

I have a big box type thing on the side of my house, quickly made about 5 years ago. Half of it houses a 500 litre water tank and hydrofor (to pressure the house water supply) and half is a simple storage area for boat stuff.

It's tatty and it's on the list for renewal this coming winter. I won't be making a wood framework though. Wood takes up too much space for me so it'll be 25mm square steel tube for the frame. I'll follow your lead though and make a proper flat base for it. The side of the house, although 'paved' isn't level so a decent base will allow me to make a better job of the whole thing. The boat bits store certainly needs some organisation but unfortunately, like most things boat, nothing is a regular shape.

Most sensible thing I have done for a while. Somewhere to keep all those useful odds and ends of scrap that's too good to bin (i.e. any offcut). Can't just put them in a deep drawer or bucket because you'll never find them. So I made a very shallow drawer that runs on the floor, under a bench into a walkway.





Takes a huge amount of weight being flat on a floor with multiple cheapo little castors.
Takes up no space being under an existing cabinet
Uses no additional room because the floor space it run into is a walkway and has to stay clear (this encourages me to keep it clear too!)
Very shallow so stuff doesn't get lost/buried/forgotten in a drawer

There's room into the corridor to pull out a small drawer but the height won't allow for wheels So I need to find some runners to enable the pulling out! There is so little space here that I want to store things like bathroom supplies. It's worth me bulk buying things like shampoo/shower gel and the like in the uk sometimes as I've not found comparable pricing here - depending on the exchange rate!! but I have no space to store them. But the space under the shower room floor will be 'dead' space, so will be looking at drawers

As for the base....

It was somewhat challenging substrate wise and I had nothing but old remnant bags of concrete, cement, sand, rubble...



I just filled up the form with whatever I had. I guess this is why they call it "mud".



But the self levelling screed did the business and saved the day.



Very happy with how it turned out.

Yes it is not a new invention but it just goes to show that if you use a very stiff board underneath it, you can use multiple tiny castors. So for example, you could (if you had enough of them) use little Lego wheels or whatever. Anything that can be fitted to the base, distributed widely and not come off will allow the drawer to roll.

Got a couple of those but they're in the garage. Used them for spare bedding under the bed but found that the dead air underneath started to make the carpet go mouldy because they didn't get moved much. (Probably not go for carpets next time, they should be fine on a hard floor - I think).

Possibly. I'll have more of a look when I get close enough to building the drawers!!

These were what I originally had in mind (but didn't know the name of!!). The drawers won't be particularly heavy, even with stuff in. Just in an awkward position

That looks awesome. The number one problem I have these days is everything takes me ages, I can't cut in a straight line - I've completely lost my mojo.
