Maybe, but lots aren't - e.g. our Up(2018). It's something every driver needs to be aware of. When the ignition is on, have you lights at both ends, or just the front?

FWIW, I don't use the 'auto' setting for lights, it's a conscious decision when to use them.

I've nearly reversed into a couple of things already 'cause my car doesn't beep any more....

Shortly after we'd bought our 2018 Skoda Octavia I reversed into a lamppost - or thought I had. There was a horrible crunching/grinding noise as the car stopped suddenly. I got out to discover the rear bumper was a few inches from the post. I then found out it had automatic braking when reversing. I assume the noise is to discourage you from making a habit of it.

My current cheapo runaround has auto lights and wipers which are okay, whereas my old BMW got it right every time. In both cars the dash lights change when the headlights are on rather than just than DRLs (screens go to 'dark mode' etc.).

I never touched the light or wiper controls in the Bimmer, auto worked so well. Just left them both on that forever.

My next car (currently on order) claims to have auto high/low beam too, we'll see how that works

Might work with cars oncoming, but perhaps not for cyclists or pedestrians.

The new multi-mirror adaptive systems seem quite amazing, but I dread to think of replacement costs. Full LED headlamp clusters are something like £800-1000 each for the Leon. Allegedly 'for life' ... They are superb, though. I deliberately avoided 'brilliant'

Badly if my experience is anything to go by. I usually switch to dip way before the auto detects an oncoming vehicle. The auto usually waits until the main beam has momentarily blinded the other driver. (Switched it off at the first opportunity).

They actually claim to be a step beyond just auto dip. They're LED, so they've got a much wider and more controlled spread. Rather than being a single point lamp and a reflector they're a shaped array of bulbs (that's why LEDs don't need washers by law BTW, they have a wider throw with fewer lumens).

In this car it selectively turns off 'bits' of the lamp to only dip some of it.

I leave the lights and wipers (except when it's cold) set to auto on the civic, the lights are a smidge too sensitive for my liking, coming on when I wouldn't choose to have them on.

Only used auto high beams on a Mitsubishi a few years a go and the wife's (2019) Passat, yeah it got turned off on both, most of the time it worked well enough but every now and again both failed to 'see' the oncoming car

I deactivate the wipers each time to help avoid forgetting to when its frosty.

I'm pretty sure the beemers wouldn't wipe for the first time until you started moving....which may not be all that smart

Never burned out me motor, put it that way.
