My paternal grandparents were similar. I was explaining to a school friend once that my Grannie would cook eggs in butter and butter chicken was one of the best meals (TBF, it was chicken fried in butter with whiskey added to make a 'sauce'!! LOL) and she always used butter and full fat cream etc (this was in the age of margarine and skimmed milk!). I bet she did a mean Ulster fry too!! LOL

My friend asked me if they were both alive and I had to say that my Grandpop was dead, of a heart attack. She responded with - see, it's unhealthy to have all that butter, cream and fat milk.

Grandpop was 84 when he had the heart attack - at the helm of the yacht they both lived on and sailed cross channel all summer and after being in the navy for two world wars and various other military stuff, plus a second career in Customs and Excise!!! I reckon 84 after all that, plus eating proper food, was pretty darned good!! LOL



I only have skimmed milk cos that was what my mum used all through our childhood (although I do remember the bottles with pecked foil tops!!) - full fat tastes weird now But I do use butter for cooking, and none of this weird cream!! LOL

I'm not sure it's too bad for the environment either. I pretty much cut out red meat and try not to fly because I believe they are more detrimental.

I haven't really looked into milk. I could be incorrect. I do have it every day on my Crunchy Bran and in tea and I'm all slim and ripped like Brad Pitt in Snatch.

I've not researched it but I'm pretty sure there is nothing 'wrong' with it except that the people advocating watering almonds and flying the resulting 'milk' all around the world thing that buying red meat locally or having cows on local pasture instead of flying out of season vegetables is bad for the environment!

It's not great for the calves that don't get to drink it. Veal is a by-product of the milk industry. The activists call milk 'liquid meat'. Dairy cow herds have similar problems to beef I suppose in the land set aside to grow their feed, methane emissions etc etc. Keeping cows in calf/lactating may not be particularly kind if it's non-stop then pet food.

I tried a few alternatives but the contents are a bit off-putting/chemistry lab. Goat milk is but similar meat issues to cows, something has to be done with the kids and that's usually eaten. Have used goat butter too.

In the end I just stick with organic milk and butter from cows + cow or sheep's cheese.

(Vegetarian cheese is a joke really if it's made with cow's milk. It might not have rennet in it but it's effectively made from baby cows).

Our local farm sells raw milk from a Jersey cow herd. You can buy re-useable bottles and its available via a vending machine. So 0 miles on it so to speak. The milk is unpasteurised and non homogenised. I don't like full fat milk usually but this stuff is decent in cereal and coffee but I find it too much in tea. We used to buy from them a couple of times a week but not been in a while. I've noticed a lot of the Turkish people locally buy gallons of the stuff, they turn up with massive containers.

They also make ice cream and its absolutely bloody delicious

Pour the creamy top off onto cereals and into coffee and use what's left in tea*. But yeah, full fat in tea is After having semi-skimmed for years I've gone back to full fat on cereals (wife puts yogurt on hers ).

Wonder why it should be popular with the Turks? Never associated the place with milk at all really. Maybe @Yambo might illuminate?
