I drink milk. My wife has recently changed to "oat milk" because of gut problems, which is fair enough IMO. My milk comes from the cows over the hedge (so to speak), hers comes from "Europe". In a lorry.

Almond milk is a bit too. Takes about 5 litres of water per almond. They ignore this and tell you how the trees take CO2 out of the atmosphere but the California almond area is a bit of an eco-disaster. Oat milk is supposed to be best in this country...if you use local oats and produce it locally. Tastes a bit weird though.

I once got lectured about air miles of food by a friend because another friend had brought me chocolate and goodies from the UK. She then proceeded to ask me to buy her almond milk when I went to the valley I couldn't keep quiet and did mention that it was a bit rich that she'd lectured me about chocolate being added to a car journey that was already happening and then ask for almond milk that took thousands of litres of water to produce and travelled halfway across the world She still bought the almond milk, but she didn't lecture me again

We've got more almonds than we know what to do with at the moment, wifey has been making a home made version of almond milk. There doesn't seem to be any waste from it but I don't use it and haven't been paying too much attention, she's definitely not using 5 litres of water per almond.

It's actually 4.6l and I believe the figure comes from the California industrial scale almond plantations. To compound that problem, the whole area uses so much chemical fertiliser that lakes and watercourses and possibly groundwater and aquifers are completely uggbered. (Been watching a Simon Reeve series where he travelled from top to bottom of The Americas. The California bit was ).

There's one of those vending machines near me which sells fresh whole milk. You bring your own container and it dispenses milk from the farm that morning.

Fresh? As in unpasteurised/raw?

The full fat stuff from our milkman is like milk used to be when I was a kid*. You have to shake the bottle to unblock the cream. I guess it's un-homogenised.

* You got 'normal' full cream (silver top), Channel Island (green and silver iirc) and the cream nirvana, Guernsey (gold). Blues tits used to peck holes in the tops and snaffle the cream on the doorstep. Why birds like cream is anyone's guess, easy calories I suppose. Sterilised was beer bottle topped and didn't need refrigeration, it was on the way out and tasted vile. Homogenised and semi-skimmed eventually happened.

Nah it's still pasteurised. Not sure if it's homogenised, but I assume it is otherwise the vending machine would be a tad inconsistent.
