I have tried to use my phone with a quadlok - but broken one iPhone.
What would the Mega Mile Massive recommend?
In my experience there is no point in spending a huge amount because within 4 years they are outdates.
The favourites seem to be Tom Tom and Garmin . I have had both for the car before ( and I do hope the updating of Tom Tom has got a lot better as a process the it used to be).

UK / Europe use - usual functionality - but I have no intentions of doing the Paris - Dakar

I remember my gramps using a Garmin years ago, it was lovely and worked well, but it’s another thing to attach to the bike which I’m not a fan of, unless it’s absolutely necessary. Thankfully the Beemer has the capabilities for the phone to connect to the bike and display the sat nav on the dash.

If it's only the quadlock mount damaging phones that's the problem, would using a tank bag for a phone / tablet and /or headset work?

I've had better experiences with google / apple maps in the last few years than I have had with dedicated sat-navs. Mainly garmin.

All sat navs are just stupid little computers. Software makes them so get a cheap Chinese XGody as it has iGO Primo software in them. Maps are available for a free update and you get Europe maps rather that having to pay extra. I have two XGodys, on in each van and they work flawless. In the car i have a shit Binatone what i wiped and stuck iGO Primo on and it turned a shit sat nav into a good one. Only downside is no live traffic if that is your thing. I am yet to need it and did 1000's of euro miles. Plenty up to date POI's and if needed you can stick in your dimensions if ever in a larger motor. You can also use third party route plotting software with them.

I like my Garmin Zumo XT, gets the job done, handy for traffic, weather, road closures etc when paired with your phone, came with lifetime maps so should be good for a while, bloody good big screen on it too.

Didn't some iPhones have a problem dealing with vibration? Maybe that's the issue?
Personally I use a Garmin 396 on the bike, because I like the way it does adventure routes, as it calls them, as well as being waterproof, glove-friendly and rugged. No traffic updates, but that doesn't matter much on the bike. Map updates are free, but every few months only. I don't particularly expect speed limits to be up-to-date. In the car I use a phone with Google maps.

I've been happy with Garmins. Had an old version of the Streetpilot for a few years on bikes, then bought a more modern one. Updates are a pain though. (Use the Tomtom app in the car with the phone connectivity - like it more than Google maps).

It knackers the camera OIS, and affects all phones which have it not just iphones

I just sit mine on my desk and press 'update all' and let it get on with it over the wifi

I have a Garmin Zumo as a few others have. Clips onto bike and looks tidy while giving me the info i need. Lifetime maps and updates are a piece of piss. Mine came with a car mount as well so have just taken it to Spain and used it in the hire car for the past week with no issues. It can be linked to the helmet via bluetooth for instructions and music from the iphone as well

I've had a tom tom rider 550 for three and a half years and it's been excellent. I connect it to the phones data by tethering and the traffic updates work perfectly. Updates are flagged up when I get home and it connects to the wifi and I just press update and it sorts itself out. The direct routes work the same as every other device and the wiggly explore routes are excellent too.

Mine pre-date wi-fi updating. The Streetpilot variant was 2003 and the newest one (don't know the model) is quite old (but still works fine and is otherwise easy to use and with good functionality. Garmin are pretty good at what they do ).

From what I've seen of the Tomtom app so far, they're pretty good at it too.

I'm still using google maps on the phone.

Bike mount is a Brodit in-car powered cradle on a custom-made (read "bodged") handlebar mount of my own devising.

Mount is fine, cradle works ok, the software could be better, but it all 'works'.

Would be happy to loan you my beeline to trial if you like. Uses phone battery a bit so you might need a small USB power pack for emergencies

Another vote for phone - I use mine with an SP Connect mount though my phone is a crappy Huawei P20 Pro. I'm lax at using the vibration damper but my camera appears to be working fine.

I tend to use Calimoto for leisure route planning, Waze for when I need to get somewhere.

I have an original TomTom Rider here that must be more than 18 years old!! No idea if it's possible to update it now! LOL

I liked the TTR a lot, but in lieu of having a working bike GPS, I've put my phone in my little tank bag. That mostly works but it is a pain when it's sunny as the angle is all wrong so not easy to see.

This thread is aces as I need to sort something out for next year!! LOL
