Locking your kit to your bike

Post by Jody »

I've done this a couple times recently and I'm interested to hear if anyone else does....

I use a cable type combination lock actually designed for pushbikes. I go through the grab handle, up the arm of my jacket and through my helmet and MX goggles. Admittedly it's flawed by being a combination lock for obvious reasons, though I am careful to hide the actual lock part a long way up the arm. Apart from that it feels weird doing it but it's been fine thus far. It's certainly better than lugging bulky kit around in 30 degree heat !

I do similar with my jacket at the railway station - Abus lock up the sleeve and around the grab rail. Lid and gloves sit in the top box.

Done it once, spent the day wondering if I'd come back to jacket and helmet covered in dog piss, I didn't but never again.

I often leave me lid and gloves in the top box, never left my jacket but rarely that warm in the UK

Likewise. In France (as long as I'm riding solo) gloves, lid and jacket all fit in the topbox.

I've a topbox that fits both helmets (as long as I'm not wearing my Tour-X4) and gloves.

I bought an Oxford Helmet lock, the cable part is just long enough to stretch through the arms of a jacket, but I've not used it yet.

I've used a ski lock (probably the same as the cycle lock, wire with a combination lock) - when I went to the hospital check up by bike, I locked my lid to the bike and a rucksack

I was nervous the whole time that I'd come back to no lid, but it was all there.

I would probably do it again, simply because I see so many others doing the same, it seems to be the norm around here, so cross fingers

Used a big Oxford padlock & chain to lock my jacket & helmet to the Guzzi, means I could walk around without getting a sweat on. GS with panniers & top box takes full riding kit if I'm working in London but it's shit for filtering 😕

I've locked my helmet to my bike a couple of times, but always make sure it's up on the bars or seat for that exact reason. I've seen people leave jackets and helmets down on the floor and wondered if a passing dog might leave it's mark.

Almost as bad: a friend of mine once made the mistake of leaving his helmet hanging from the bars by it's chinstrap..... at Assen.

Silly boy.

Only my lid when I have my panniers as they have a padlock that I can use. The worst thing about traveling on my own is that there is no one to look after my gear when I go to the loo so I normally end up clashing around a toilet cubicle with my helmet and rucksack. While we're not on the subject of bikers in toilet cubicles, I'm also continuously setting off the auto flush in my fluorescent gear.
