Re: No more V in SV...
It's still £11K, too much for me, a bike would have to be something special for me to spend more than £10K on it, I'm not saying the Monster isn't worth £11K, just that it doesn't appeal to me enough to spend that much on it.

There isn't a lot you can buy for less than £10k these days (unless you want a shopping bike).

I got an actual council house GSXS1000 brand new for £8k! Admittedly I have had to add my own shopping basket to itKungFooBob wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 10:30 am There isn't a lot you can buy for less than £10k these days (unless you want a shopping bike).

What has the monster become, a fake SV with some bling FFSKungFooBob wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 9:21 am Never fear!
Ducati have made the latest Monster look more like an SV and it still has a V-twin engine.
They've even just launched an SP version with extra fastness.

Re: No more V in SV...
Confirmed the hornet is getting a ≈90hp 750cc parallel twin.

The next model of cb650r will presumably get the same engine, and apparently a new Transalp, too.
Not a whole lot of 4 cylinder bikes left after that. Can't think of any under (nominal) 750cc? I know it's only sentimentality, but I'll miss that sound of small IL4 engines screaming away.

I can see why they'd do it for cost reasons, but I still can't fathom people's Meh about IL4s. I often see people say I want a bike but if can't be an IL4. I don't have any real preference on engines (although I have a big soft spot for singles) so it's not like I'm an IL4 fan boy but bugger me the engine in the GSXS 1000 is a wonderous thing. Smooth and torquey with drive everywhere, capable of rolling along at 2k rpm completely happily through town and then screaming in a riot of noise at the top end. Proper tool.

Re: No more V in SV...
The IL4 thing is funny. Some people wouldn't have one but would have an IL3, make it V4 and they'd be all over it. Same with twins, upright or in-line V is , flat or V across the frame isSupermofo wrote: ↑Mon Sep 26, 2022 9:00 am I can see why they'd do it for cost reasons, but I still can't fathom people's Meh about IL4s. It's probably down to origin, IL4 is 'Japanese', flat twin is BMW, 2V across the frame is Guzzi (or CX500 )...what they actually want is Ducati, Aprillia etc.
The 'best' engine I've had was IL4, the worst were upright twins, the most amusing was a big single and my favourite bike had a flat twin in it. I would like to try a triple for a decent length of time having only had a short spell on an early Triumph (before they called them 900s ie the 595).

Re: No more V in SV...
I associate twin cylinder engines with Superdreams, Yamaha XSs, Suzuki GSX250s and Kawasaki Z250s, I associate 4 cylinders with GS1000s and Z1000s.
I also like inline 4s to ride, the few V4s I've ridden (all Hondas) have felt like two Superdream engines joined at the hip.

Re: No more V in SV...
IL4s are ubiquitous aren't they. Probably 90% of bikes are cars are IL4 (90% across both combined I mean).
They're ubiquitous for a reason...they plod the happy middle ground of revs, torque, cost, size etc.
Ubiquitous and boring are often bed fellows.

Re: No more V in SV...
My worse engine was the Firestorm. Great on country roads but an absolute pig commuting below 35 mph, if I rode to work I'd spend 15-20 mins either at high revs in 1st or slipping the clutch constantly in 2nd/3rd. Always felt anywhere below 35 it was unhappy no matter what you did.
The triple in the MT09 engined bikes feels really close to an IL4 to me just with some extra mid range fizz and a bit of extra buzz through the bars. Fab engine.

Re: No more V in SV...
Are they for bikes anymore? Lots of manufacturers have none ie Ducati, KTM, Triumph etc MV?. And the Japanese are increasingly moving away from them. Yamaha's 2 main bike lines the MT series are twins and triples.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Mon Sep 26, 2022 9:24 am IL4s are ubiquitous aren't they. Although my Mazda 3 and my Suzuki both have IL4 engines the difference is chalk and cheese. On my last ride with my brother we stopped at a set of lights and I was actually laughing at just how ludicrously bonkers that Suzuki engine is. I get that it's the middle ground and is soooooo easy to ride, but it's most definitely fun.
Talking of engine changes Honda don't even have a V4 roadbike anymore do they? And if one engine defined a manufacturer it was Honda V4s. The world is definitely on the turn when Honda have no V4s and Ducati's top engine is a V4!!

Re: No more V in SV...
My Varadero had a detuned (with EFI and 6 gears) version of the Firestorm engine. It was brilliant low down, chugging along at low speed, around alpine hairpins two up wouldn't upset it at all.Supermofo wrote: ↑Mon Sep 26, 2022 9:28 am My worse engine was the Firestorm. Re: No more V in SV...
I've never owned an Il4 in my life (or a triple for that matter), but have ridden a few, The early R1 I rode was fun, but as it was in a dealer-sponsored ride-out we weren't allowed to go bonkers. Another was my mate's CBR600 of early noughties vintage. That had all the presence and appeal of a blancmange. The engine was gutless until you were over 9-10k. I also rode a couple of ZXR750s another mate owned. One was a cat D write-off that he'd brought back to life and was a bit of a shed, the other was the limited edition WSBK homologation 'K' model, which went like a scalded cat and felt like a two-stroke on steroids. Enormous fun if you were going for it, but probably a bit tiresome for everyday use.
I guess I need to ride a decent, modern, well set up IL4 and triple...
