Flip Lids: Recommendations

For me, I have done a reasonable amount of miles touring this year - 2500.
One thing that this has shown me is that full face rules for day trips, Sunday mornings, quick blasts- but taking a helmet off and on for basic stops etc is a PITA. Hence some sort of flip front helmet is on the cards.

1) I have always been a Arai man - but they don't do one ( or not at a price that I could afford)
2) I have tried a Shoei NeoTech on - it seemed very heavy - and the chin bar was really near my chin
3) I would not go near a Roof helmet ever again.

I would like it to be as light as possible as I seem to be developing neck movement issues.
Any suggestions or recommendations ?

Its ok but still fairly heavy, think they all are a bit. Chin bar goes behind so can be ridden open, but I never do. Some lift up and can't be ridden open legally.

Great if you smoke, I don't. Would i buy another,? Probably not.

Always had Schuberth. Some people don't like them. I've found them good enough to never bother with anything else since having a Kangol.

It always confused me that Schuberth-made BMW helmets were cheaper than Schuberth's own. They don't make them now.

Anyway, BMW Carbon System 7 should be 'fairly' light. And not stupidly expensive.

No Sharp test though, and the 6 didn't do well.

FWIW, my most recent System (can't remember which number, possibly 5) was really quiet*. That's well worth checking in reviews as many flips are noisy.

* the liner was shaped like industrial ear defenders. Might be a coincidence. Shell & vents make a difference.

I tried loads maybe 4-5 years back, all of them seemed to have the chin bar uncomfortably close to my chin, compared to my Arai's.

They might well have changed now and I don't think I tried an HJC at the time. Maybe I should have another go now things have moved on a bit.

i have a shark evo thingy ma bob. it seems ok but its not an arai.

I've got an Airoh 'over the top' flip like the shark. They're not available in the UK as far as I can tell (I got mine pre-Brexit from EU) and I'm not blown away by the build and the visor is either up or closed - no intermediate latching points - but for training it's mighty convenient and the nice thing is that at low speed with the chin bar tucked behind the lid, it's beautifully balanced. It's not too noisy either.

Don't know, I think the relationship ended a few years ago.

I would not go near a Roof helmet ever again.

Can I ask why? I want a full face Roof helmet (if I can find one, should be able to hear but few options online!!) as I really liked the two I had many years ago, for fit and function. But never crashed in either (well, not and hit my head!)

Try the Shoei Neotec again. They are heavier than a non flip lid, I think my Arai Chaser is around 1440g against 1620g for the Neotec. Given there is a flip mechanism and an internal visor you would expect it be be heavier. I swap between my Chaser and Neotec without problem, half the challenge with changing lid is getting used to the difference to your old lid.

Actually, you missed one: getting the lid on and off without taking specs or sunnies off. Might seem a minor thing but do it several times every day and sooner or later they'll end up on the ground.

I've had the shoei Syncrotech, Multitech, Neotec and now the Neotec 2 (actually I have two of them)

I've done many many '000's of hard miles in them, all weathers. For me, can't beat them. And our job has tried to move us away from them a few times, but whatever we've had as alternatives haven't been a patch on the Shoei's.

I always said I would never use a flip up but for the instructor gig it’s perfect sense instead of a normal full face lid for conversation with students road side ….. I have the Neotec 2 and in winter with all the skirting on the underside it’s the warmest helmet I have ever owned
