I suspect, if it was about earning money longer term and I knew enough about it, I'd invest in particular spares. That way you don't have to keep things running etc. Just tag 'em and bag 'em and stick 'em in the garage.

Any of the 400’s NC30/35 etc aren’t going down any time soon. First of the CBR600RR in red black are creeping up, same with SRAD 600’s and first R6. A nice 1150GS will always fetch good money too. More modern the first rninet may be worth a look.

Not in budget but I think the most sensible bikes that fit the Bill would be things like a 92 blade although there are so many blades around, the first red and white r1s and things like that. It’s a gamble though.

The reason this has come up is that I was thinking of all the cars I missed the boat on that are now realistically out of reach.

The round headlight ones as you say are desirable- mine was 1100 quid (1995 bought unseen) it’s Tatty but I think I’d get back what I’ve spent on it inc tyres and odds and sides.
As you say there are loads of nineties fire blades around and at all sorts of prices which seem to be falling back post Covid -

I've seen some TL1000s, YZF 750s, ZXR 750s etc that have been for sale with the same dealers for over a year. No idea at what point they realise they are over priced.

I used to think that what I really wanted was a CB-1 in lovely condition to pootle about on. In 1989 they really were a good bike. A product of that special time when Japanese buyers couldn't readily buy a bike over 400cc, it had a lovely smooth engine with the whizzy gear driven cams, was light enough depsite steel swingarm and frame, had a nice riding position, etc. etc.

But actually what I really want is a CB-1 engine, but with basically everything else modernised and more suspension travel and space since I'm older and fatter now. I don't want carbs, I don't want halogen headlights, I don't want analogue clocks, etc.

So my realisation: Good moments in history are just that. Remember the B&W one fondly, but get the OLED telly with all the bells.

As for everything new being better...water based paint, emission controls etc etc might be 'better' in some respects but I'm not convinced they make a better bike.

Sure, we could go back to lead-based paint. Do you miss fuel with lead in it too?

I am actually very happy to carry a catalyst on my bike. Quite apart from the hippy stuff, I don't miss walking into the office smelling of unburnt fuel vapours one iota. I'm also happy my little CB300R has evaporative controls, because I don't need my garage to smell of fuel either. Would it be nice to lose the 1 or 2 kg's that costs, and loosen the collar around your bike's neck? Sure, but it's not exactly a problem to have that stuff, is it?

The CB-1 was all about having an IL4 engine whether it made sense or not, so more likely CB650R as a modern equivalent if we're ignoring the original's 45-ish bhp, but I see where you're going.

There's that many versions of the CB1100 and Z900 to choose from...
