Given the pitiful amount of interest available, if you had 5k ish to buy a bike with the express intention of the value appreciating over time, what would you buy?

I can't think of any specific model,but something popular that's worth considerably more than 5K with a clean history & the consumables aren't worn out.
My mate owns a garage business & last month a customer said to him,'I've got to move pretty soon & I've nowhere to store the bikes give me £800 & you can have that T140 Bonneville that's standing in the garden.Mate reckons it needs rebuilding but he'll get £1800 all day long without spending any money on it..

Hopefully a GSX-R1100N.

Although I'm not sure I can be bothered waiting for it to appreciate. I might try and sell it for what I bought it for and buy a knackered Firestorm instead.

Qs? Do you intend to ride it or is it a mothball job? Are you looking for a project? Does it have to be something you like?

TBH Once the new laws kick in I reckon lots of bikes will appreciate as long as spares are available.
Doubt is not a pleasant condition.

Well we paid £3700 for our zx6 back nearly 5 years ago. If someone offered me £3700 for it now I'd laugh at them.

So a nice super low miles example of something would be my answer.

If you can get one for that price,then a Kawasaki triple. It would have to be something like an S1 or S2,maybe an S3. The H1 and H2 are tens of thousands now for a good example.

Looking on Ebay KX500S have absolutely shot up recently which is a surprise.
You'd be lucky to get one for five grand though.

Will petrol bikes keep appreciating?

For sure there will be petrol available for a good few years yet, but how long, how widespread and at what cost? There's got to be a tipping point where it won't be as straightforward to get petrol as riding to the local supermarket and at that point how many people will bother. It's one thing buying a minty 92 Blade that you ride to a bike meet occasionally and so can see the value but another if every ride is a massive pain in the arse and costly so it effectively becomes an ornament.

At the min lots of second hand bike values are going up quickly and I'm not convinced 80% if not more are worth it in classic terms. A Thunderace for example is never gonna be a grade A classic no matter what you put in your Ad.

Not in budget but I think the most sensible bikes that fit the Bill would be things like a 92 blade although there are so many blades around, the first red and white r1s and things like that. It’s a gamble though.

The reason this has come up is that I was thinking of all the cars I missed the boat on that are now realistically out of reach.

You're probably right as far as bikes for commuting go but, let's be honest, a lot of bikes are expensive toys and don't do a lot of miles. Petrol is going to be available while petrol cars are still on the road. There may be fewer pumps at a station and more chargers but I'd say you're going to be OK for a good few years.
Cost? If people want and can afford an £11-12k bike for the odd sunny day jolly (or even 2 or 3 of them) I can't see a £60 tankful of fuel putting them off. There's also the pleasure of being part of an increasingly 'different' type of road user group.
A lot of the ordinary stuff will get scrapped and no new petrol bikes available (although imports might) so a decent or vaguely iconic bike like a 'Blade will probably always have a market.
There may also be interesting stuff like hydrogen conversion becoming a thing...that'd be interesting. (I assume that crash-proof, non-exploding hydrogen storage is feasible). Anyone know of any hydrogen powered bikes?

There are new petrol vehicles for sale today and will be for years,so I can't see petrol being a rare thing for many moons to come.

My mindset would be,if I want something and can afford it,then buy it and let the big boys sort out the stuff out of my control.

I wouldn't bother, there are better ways to make money, spend the £5K on a bike you want to own, it'll give you more pleasure than being smug about buying a bike that goes up in value - unless you want to be one on of those sad muppets who stands around at bike shows telling people how much your bike is worth and how much you paid for it, then when you decide to sell it you find out how much it's actually worth (£10K power valves that actually sell for £4K spring to mind)

plenty of bikes go up and go up by lots.... but there's got a be a reason, usually smaller production runs, or some sense of rose tinted glasses

@Monstyr has a Ducati 1000 Sport classic that must be worth 3X what he paid for it at least.... i've seen them sell at the big asking price too... So not people asking daft money..

748S, 748R, 749R etc also gone up massively... but it's a question of picking the right one.

People said "the white and red R1...." but that never really worked out. Even though some still think it has/will. So for me, i'd be going something Italian, short in production run and quite desireable

Everyone selling an old bike is on the bandwagon. It's either collectable or becoming collectable,so has a collectable price. I know used prices are high in general,but I often wonder if a lot of the asking prices are attainable in the real world.
