Road tax question

Post by ninja »

I'm going to trailer my Z1000 down to the French Alps in a week or so. My tax will run out while I'm away. Will I still be insured in France with no tax on the bike?
It won't touch a UK road.

The French filth are only interested in the V5, the insurance certificate and the contents of your bank account. They have no idea about tax or MOTs.

As I understand it road tax / VED has no bearing on insurance validity.

If I'm wrong a few people I know who have UK reg'd cars at their holiday homes abroad for several years at a time are going to be upset.

Depends on the terms of the insurance. There may be a clause saying the vehicle must be taxed and tested.

That's what I wondered. I suppose I'd better read the smallprint.

They're cracking down on this now - already checking passport stamps for residency and it'll all be databased next year anyway. Starting to hand out fines at ferry crossing points.

It's 5,000€ here for still driving on UK licence.

Driving a forrin registered car as a resident. Loads of long term 2nd home owners over here have grabbed a Carte de Sejour when they probably shouldn't have.

So far I've only heard of fines going the other way (because tbf I'm not interested in the other way) where ex-pats in their UK-reg cars have handed over their passports and CdS at Fronch customs and been slapped with a fine.
But presumably if you go through Fronch customs as 'a holidaymaker' get your passport stamped and then overstay your 3 months, you get fined on the way back? Dunno, like I say I don't fall into that camp, I don't have any UK regd vehicles any more anyway, so I've not really been following it.

Pre brexit, you were still technically (actually!) in violation of your insurance requirements for residency, but customs weren't doing any checking.
