The Minister for Making the Elderly Feel Unthreatened* has his finger on the pulse of popular opinion again. He's got a major say on UK energy now in his new job.

On one of his podcasts, Mr Rees-Mogg talks about "hairshirt greenery", the idea that environmental problems can be addressed by limiting our consumption of resources.

"If you are too aggressive, too "hairshirty" people won't vote for it." he says.

"So you've got to go with the grain of public opinion with what people are willing to accept. And that means raising living standards through efficient use of technology".

In that light, latest polling on renewables conducted by Mr Rees-Mogg's new department makes interesting reading. It shows that 7% of people would be unhappy (compared to 54% who would be happy) about a solar farm being built in their local area and 12% unhappy (with 43% happy) about an on-shore wind-farm.

So I should have a word with the company I paid to supply and install solar panels on my roof to get my money back?
Only if the cost of mains electricity doesn't include anything towards the cost of building and maintaining the generation and distribution infrastructure.

But you knew that.

I’m a little ocd about heating costs. Back in January of this year I did some checks.

Our living room is about 10ft high, 12ft tops. It’s 6 degrees C higher temp up there than waist level

I bought a solar powered fan and got some air movement. jan ,Feb March , myself and the wife were watching tv in our underwear. (No pics can be provided)

I have a infra red camera. Together with a door handle and a letterbox,.....these two are cold

Got any info on that fan? How's it work in the evening? (I assume the solar charges a battery).

Not sure I get the significance of the cold metalwork on the door.

Politician in 'wanting to be voted for' shocker?

In today's news:
It is unclear how long the support will last, but the government is expected to borrow at least £100bn to pay for it.

And how much, and for how long, will that add to everyone's energy bills?

The energy cost will stay the same, the will be repaid by taxpayers. PFI, student loans, etc., same principle again.

I have similar (though not solar). Ceiling fan is placed about 1.5m in front of the wood burner, when the burner is up to temp you can stand under the fan, walk in any direction and you go through a very noticeable wall of heat being pushed downwards.

If you had OCD you'd know precisely how high your living room ceiling was. :D

I have ceiling fans in my living room and bedrooms and use them all year round. I only rarely use the aircon which I had fitted back in 2006, the fans are adequate. In winter they help to circulate the heat from my wood burner and if I open the living room doors, they'll even raise the temp upstairs in winter. To be fair though it never gets that cold here.

€8/15kg is surprisingly low, it's actually cheaper than the cheapest A1 pellets I can find here which, given the disparity in salaries, makes what you're paying a bit of a bargain compared to Bulgaria.
Eventually found some stock. 10€/15kg bag. :o Limited to 20 per customer, they were flying out. Said they were expecting more later this week @ 12€ and the following week @ 15€

Annoyingly, they were selling some diminutive pellet stoves that would be ideal for my office but tbh I don't want to commit myself to even greater demand for these scarce pellets at the moment.

Can someone explain please.

Truss is going to set a limit on how much the energy companies can charge. Is this limit going to be lower than the current price?
In exchange for setting this limit, the energy companies are loaning the government money which the tax payer will pay off over 10-20 years.

HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE ????

"Can't afford your energy bill?, don't worry it's only going to go up once or twice more and then when its stops going up. We are going to 'have' to raise taxes to cover it not going up by as much as it could have, but we're not going to put an extra tax on the energy companies that are making record profits"

Makes sense in one respect. Kick the problem down the road until after the next election then hope that everyone has forgotten 5 years after that.

Elephant in the room, what will happen to Cost of Living payments next year? According to the BBC they are due to end
These payments will only be paid this winter, under current plans, whereas the cap will be in place for two years. So, there will be an effective rise in what householders pay next winter.

seems to be a selection of short term solutions (to appease the masses) to a long term problem.

This crisis in which energy companies are lending their super-profits to the state, for the state to pay the bills of the citizens, for the citizens to pay back the energy companies and add interest- you think that's how capitalism is supposed to work? :D
